The SFDPH Office of Health Equity (OHE) was established in 2019 to increase resources, coordination, and support for efforts to advance health and workplace equity across the department. OHE is responsible for a range of activities related to equity, particularly racial equity. These include staff and leadership training, community engagement, external and internal collaboration, and direct service to target populations. On a strategic level, OHE is a partner in overall planning, tracking and evaluation of SFDPH equity work. Advancing equity work is the responsibility of every SFDPH employee. The Office of Health Equity supports staff and sections in meeting that responsibility.

The Mission of the San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH) is to protect and promote the health of all San Franciscans. SFDPH strives to achieve its mission through the work of multiple divisions - the San Francisco Health Network, Population Health, Behavioral Health Services, and Administration. The San Francisco Health Network is the City’s only complete system of care and has locations throughout the City, including Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center, Laguna Honda Hospital and Rehabilitation Center, and over 15 primary care health centers. The Population Health Division (PHD) provides core public health services for the City and County of San Francisco: health protection, health promotion, disease and injury prevention, and disaster preparedness and response. Behavioral Health Services operates in conjunction with SFHN and provides a range of mental health and substance use treatment services.
Job DescriptionUnder immediate supervision, the 9924 Public Service Aide will support health care services by organizing documents, preparing data reports, assisting with logistical support for staff and events, and engaging in community and equity-related initiatives.
Examples of essential duties of this position include but are not limited to:
- Conduct literature reviews and analyze case studies on effective community engagement and health disparity reduction practices.
- Design community events to share data with priority populations, develop bi-directional communication strategies, and manage surveys, outreach, and data analysis.
- Support meeting coordination, curriculum design, and interview preparation.
- Assist with health and racial equity training, community partnerships, and presentation delivery.
- Help coordinate Equity Learning Series, develop educational materials, and create discussion guides.
- Compile resources on social determinants, health equity, and health disparities.
- Assist with updates on the OHE webpage, newsletter, and equity-focused communications.
- Contribute to policy development, workplan creation, and related procedures.
- Facilitate communication with equity stakeholders and leadership.
- Explore community engagement strategies, including social media use.
- Participate in multidisciplinary meetings to provide updates on equity efforts.
- Attend health-related meetings and present on equity initiatives as needed.
- Utilize MS Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams.
The 9924 Public Service Aide performs other related duties as assigned/required.
QualificationsMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Current enrollment in or completion of a baccalaureate or graduate degree program in public health, communications, public administration, public policy, or a closely related field from an accredited college or university.

- Proficiency in online communication, including social media and digital tools.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with experience in presenting and writing effectively.
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills for maintaining accurate and timely records.
- Proven ability to take initiative and work effectively both independently and collaboratively with diverse SFDPH staff and stakeholders.
- Proficiency in word processing and spreadsheet software (e.g., MS Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.)
- Flexibility and adaptability in various work environments.
- Familiarity with San Francisco communities.
