This Opportunity
WSP is currently initiating a search for a Health and Safety Specialist for our Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania office. Be involved in projects with our Earth & Environment Team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our client’s objectives and solves their challenges. The current job assignment is located near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in southeastern Ohio. This is a long term field assignment starting in early 2024 with an expected duration of 3 to 4 years.
Your Impact
- Serve as the primary WSP point of contact for health and safety related communications between Client, WSP, remedial contractor, and subcontractors.
- Review contractor job hazard analyses and conduct field hazard and risk review in coordination with the contractor site safety officer and field supervisor if an unexpected hazard is identified.
- Review of all contractors submitted health and safety plans prior to construction, ensuring plans adequately cover Client/Project requirements and then monitor activity for adherence to approved plans.
- Obtain and verify contractor health and safety training records and equipment inspections records meet project and regulatory requirements.
- Review requests for transport of heavy and large loads to and from Site on public roadways.
- Attend daily health and safety meetings to encourage and enforce compliance to Client/Project requirements and monitor compliance activities on projects.
- Facilitate safety meetings with both internal and external personnel, training of standard operating procedures and miscellaneous initiatives as requested.
- Respond to and report on-site safety incidents and emergencies, and coordinate investigations.
- Continuous monitoring of all project health and safety related activities to ensure alignment with and adherence to all Health & Safety, Quality and Environmental Management systems and plans.
- Oversee required air monitoring and personal dosimetry for field activities.
- Ensure field activities comply to all project and regulatory health and safety requirements.
- Identify process improvement opportunities for health and safety.
- Maintain health and safety documentation in a central location.
- Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
- Understands, trains, and enforces “Stop Work” principle.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
- Must be able to pass a HAZWOPER physical and be medically able to wear a tight-fitting respirator / Fit for Duty Exam / Medical Exam.
- This role is subject to a client-mandated drug/alcohol testing policy. As such, employee may be subject to random drug/alcohol tests. A copy of this policy will be provided during employee onboarding and is available upon applicant request.

Who You Are
Required Qualifications
- Associate or Bachelor's Degree
- 5-7 years' experience in project safety, health, environment and/or quality is required.
- Specific experience working in field with various construction disciplines.
- Experience with safety on location at construction sites.
- Capable interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to a technical and non-technical audience.
- Effective self-leadership with attention to detail, results orientation, and managing multiple priorities in a dynamic work environment.
- Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
- Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
- This position is subject to and contingent upon client approval of candidates put forth for consideration by WSP.
- Must be able to complete 40 hour HAZWOPER and 1st aid/CPR training within the first 30 days of hire.
Preferred Qualifications
- 3+ years onsite construction safety experience with a diverse project background.
- Completed an OSHA 30 Hour Outreach Construction Course.
