Primary Purpose:
Under the supervision of a librarian, the person in this position will assist students and staff in the use of library resources and equipment, perform a wide variety of responsible clerical duties and other specialized duties relative to the operation of a library, and do related work as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification: High school diploma or GED
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Proficient keyboarding and file maintenance skills
Basic computer skills - word processing, spreadsheet, etc.
Ability to shelve books following district cataloging system
Effective communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to work well with students and teachers
Experience:
One year experience working with children
One year clerical experience
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Library Program Support
1. Provide instruction and assistance in using library resources, including library activities and read alouds.
2. Shelve incoming books, materials, and equipment using the Dewey Decimal system.
3. Ready materials for classroom or reserve collection use as requested by teachers.
4. Prepare bulletin boards and displays and assist the librarian in preparing instructional materials.
5. Assist students and teachers with computer-based activities, in location of print and nonprint resources, and in resolution of minor computer difficulties.
Accounting and Inventory
6. Operate the library automated circulation system, as well as receiving and processing of books, materials and equipment per BISD Library Services policies.
7. Collect and maintain records of student fines and prepare parent notifications as needed.
8. Repair books, magazines, materials, and equipment or process for repair at outside facilities.
9. Maintain adequate supplies for library and assist in the annual inventory and weeding of library materials.
Clerical Support
10. Prepare appropriate routine correspondence using personal computer.
11. Assist librarian in keeping administrative records and preparing required reports.
12. Use district student database to monitor student grade levels, schedules, and current enrollment status.
Student Management
13. Maintain friendly, cooperative and effective relationships with students, and maintain an orderly atmosphere by supervising students and assisting teachers in the supervision of students per campus guidelines and expectations.
14. Perform assigned student monitoring duties.
Other
15. Perform other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Supervise the day-to-day operation of the library in coordination with campus librarian or library supervisor.
Equipment Used:
Computer, printer, hand-held barcode scanner, copier, and laminator.
Working Conditions:
Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
Ability to communicate verbally and in writing. Work with frequent interruptions. Maintain emotional control under stress. Frequent climbing, stretching, bending, stooping, walking, standing, reaching and stair climbing. Frequent lifting of books, boxes, and heavy objects (45lbs or over).
