The American Heart Association’s Internship Program provides college students an opportunity for hands-on experience in various facets for individuals interested in gaining work experience with a non-profit, voluntary health organization. 

We have an exciting opportunity for an intern to work closely with the Community Impact Team to assist in the implementation of a sustainable culture of health within the diverse & vulnerable communities in Greater Charlotte Market. Individuals will obtain practical experience and receive hands-on training in various disciplines, particularly regarding our organizational priority Nation of Life Savers.

Internship Overview:

• Time Commitment: 20 hours per week
• Internship Duration: 1/1/2025 – 6/30/2025
• Hybrid Position-Mondays in office day and then flexible to go into the office.  They will do outreach in the community. Charlotte, NC-Greater Charlotte Region
• Salary: $23 per hour

Internship Outcomes:

Individuals participating in the internship program are provided with an opportunity to:

• Gain important and practical job skills to be successful in a non-profit environment
• Opportunity to explore a career-path with a reputable voluntary health/service organization
• Complete an internship that enriches your academic and professional resume as well as enriching your personal life by making a difference in the lives of others

• Assist in organizing/implementing community and culturally appropriate health initiatives and programs throughout communities.
• Support work around community impact priority issues including Nation of Lifesavers (Community Response), as described above and other areas to include potential hypertension control, nutrition insecurity, and tobacco/vaping intiatives.
• Assist community impact team in communicating the impact of local work around particularly Nation of Lifesavers
• Identify impact stories for showcasing, enhance via research and interviews, and develop communication pieces for online or offline sharing.
• Identify, review, and develop resources that meet community health needs such as playbooks and other tools.
• Explore state or local organizations that align with AHA priority issue areas and identify opportunities for collaboration.
• Assist with the planning and implementation of trainings and other community impact meetings as it relates to the impact work underway.
• Attend internal and external meetings as requested, including health fairs and community events as necessary.
  
  

• Candidates who are seniors or graduate students pursuing a degree in public health, health, health sciences, or other related degree programs.
• Demonstrated ability to research health topics and translate findings into actionable guidance.
• Bi-lingual in Spanish preferred.
• Ability/willingness to travel across the Greater Charlotte Region for events; have a means of reliable transportation.
• Demonstrated excellence in written communications skills, including writing on health topics for promotional or educational outcomes.
• Demonstrated skills in effective one-on-one and group communications and comfort with working with all levels of community leaders, volunteers, and staff.
• Ability to deal professionally in a corporate or non-profit environment and assume responsibility for guiding projects and programs from inception through completion.
• Effective oral, written and presentation communication skills
• Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment managing multiple priorities involving multiple entities
• Intermediate to excellent proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint
• Required Equipment: Reliable WiFi Connection and reliable transportation.
• Minimum availability of 20 hrs/wk, M-F between the hours of 8:30am-5pm.
• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship, now or in the future. For any roles working remotely, the work must also be performed inside the United States, not in a foreign country.
