Job Description:
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented full-time Laboratory Assistant to join our team. This role involves a variety of tasks in media preparation, fish facility maintenance, and shipping/documentation, ensuring efficient and accurate laboratory operations.
Media Preparation and Maintenance
- Perform media preparation tasks, including preparing M9, TAE, sterile water, and aliquoting reagents.
- Prioritize the pouring and seeding of plates to meet laboratory demands efficiently.
- Assist with cleanroom operations by pouring and seeding plates according to laboratory protocols.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of laboratory equipment and workspaces.
- Prepare PCR electrophoresis gels following established procedures.
- Autoclave reagents and waste as required.
- Maintaining a clean lab space.
Fish Facility Maintenance
- Perform routine fish tank maintenance, including cleaning, water changes, and feeding.
- Operate the dishwasher and carry out bleaching and neutralizing procedures.
- Manage rotifer care tasks, such as water changes, collections, cleaning, and counting.
- Assist with additional duties as needed, including water testing, embryo sorting, and fish crosses when time permits.
Shipping and Documentation
- Support the Project Manager in shipping tasks, including creating documents, aliquoting reagents, labeling tubes/plates, and preparing deliverables.
- Hand over all deliverables to the Director of Operations for final quality control and shipment.
- Enjoy working on repetitive tasks and processes with high attention to detail and accuracy.
Qualifications:
- Ability to follow detailed instructions and maintain accurate records.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Effective communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
- Willingness to learn and adapt to new tasks and procedures.
- Physical capability to lift and move laboratory equipment and supplies as needed.
- Comfort with frequent hand-tool use, such as roller pipettes and micro pipetting.
- Enjoyment of repetitive tasks
Physical Requirements
- Able to work upright and stationary and/or standing for typical working hours.
- Able to lift and move objects up to 25 pounds.
- Able to work in non-traditional work environments.
- Able to use and learn standard office equipment and technology with proficiency.
- May have exposure to potentially hazardous elements typically found in laboratory environments.
