WSP is currently initiating a search for a Lead Structural Engineer for our New York City office to be involved in projects with our Bridge Structures Team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our client’s objectives and solves their challenges.
Provides high level technical assistance and guidance for multi-site/phase due diligence, investigation, remediation, improvement, and/or construction of building and infrastructure projects in the public and private sector. Tasks include the research, design, concept development, planning, and construction of load-bearing structures or structural elements, such as buildings bridges, roadways, and mechanical structures. Substantiates reports and documentation to advise on material, installation, design, and construction specifications. Ensures that responsibilities are delivered and adhered to with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards for design, safety, structural soundness, and functionality.
Your Impact
- The ideal candidate will have broad-based, hands-on experience in structural and transportation engineering including the ability to execute tasks as part of a multi-disciplinary team
- Assignments may include: Planning, Analysis, Design and Rehabilitation of Highway Bridges, Transit and Transportation Facilities for all phases of a project from conceptual design through final design; Digital delivery of project deliverables; Analysis Design and Retrofit of Retaining Walls; Construction Staging Analysis; Evaluation of Existing Structures and Load Ratings; Plan Development, Preparation of Specifications, Review of Construction Phase Submittals and Shop Drawings; Preparation of Technical Reports; and Participation in Field Work including Construction and Structural Integrity Inspection.
- Apply high-level structural and civil engineering techniques and processes to identify improvements for various infrastructure project phases including concept development, preliminary design, final design, procurement, construction, and operation.
- Perform professional structural engineering work and conduct research and inspections of proposed and existing site conditions, resources, buildings, infrastructure, transportation channels, and operations to determine conformance with applicable rules, standards, and construction or operating permits.
- Develop construction plans, specifications, and cost estimates; preparing construction safety and phasing plans, and updating infrastructure layout plans that require coordination with owners, other disciplines, sub-consultants, and clients.
Involved from project inception to completion in the management of design, construction, rehabilitation, and remediation of building and infrastructure projects, ensuring durability of materials and structural soundness from loads and pressures caused by environmental or human influence. - Lead junior engineers during the planning and design process.
- Work independently and as part of a cross-functional team of engineers, architects, planners, and scientific professionals to execute project work, assist with laying out installations, establishing reference points/elevations/grades to guide construction, selecting appropriate materials to ensure durability, calculating costs and quantities of material/equipment/labor, and ensuring project work conforms with specifications, permit applications, compliance documentation, and regulatory and technical analysis memos.
- Work collaboratively with other engineers, professionals, and infrastructure authorities on Federal, State, regional, local and privately funded improvement and development projects.
- Comply with safety guidelines and site-specific procedures which include but are not limited to, location data, statistical documentation, engineering studies and surveys, and construction.
- Interact with regulatory agencies, subcontractors, and clients in a confident and professional manner.
- Remain current in latest structural engineering techniques and practices.
- Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Who You Are
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering, or closely related discipline.
- 7 + years of relevant post education experience in engineering discipline and prior structural or civil design experience.
- Actively registered/licensed as a Professional Engineer in New York State, or in another state with ability to obtain New York State licensure.
- Proficient with structural engineering principles, practices, process, design/build, and the application to project work-related issues.
- Knowledge and experience with infrastructure planning, design, and construction management; including active involvement in a variety of rehabilitation, new design, and construction projects.
- Experience in bridge design, including project involvement in a variety of rehabilitation and reconstruction, new design, and construction projects.
- Experience with structural steel design, reinforced concrete design and prestressed concrete design
- Proficient with making technical computations and calculations involving the application of engineering principles, understanding plans and specifications, and making factual comparisons to the appropriate regulations.
- High proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, spreadsheets, technology, and tools.
- Demonstrated high-level of self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
- Works independently with minimal oversight and provides guidance and leadership to junior team or project members, with strict adherence to QA/QC.
- Well-developed critical thinking and problem-solving skills required to apply technical knowledge to reach conclusions from testing results, data collation, computations, statistical analysis and arriving at the most effective, economical, and logical solution.
- Demonstrated effectiveness at coordinating and assertively directing subcontractors and others to consistently complete tasks safely and efficiently.
- Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
- Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
- Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s Degree in Engineering.
- Ability to use software to develop 3D designs and digital models such as REVIT and open Bridge is highly desirable.
- A member of and/or actively participate in local professional practice organizations.
- Design experience of Complex infrastructure projects
Compensation and Benefits:
WSP provides a comprehensive suite of benefits including medical, dental, vision, disability, life, and retirement savings focused on a providing health and financial stability throughout the employee’s career.
Expected Salary: $89,200 - $182,000
WSP USA is providing the compensation range and general description of other compensation and benefits that the company in good faith believes it might pay and/or offer for this position based on the successful applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities in addition to internal equity and geographic location. WSP USA reserves the right to ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and offer additional benefits and other compensation, depending on circumstances not related to an applicant’s sex or other status protected by local, state, or federal law.
