Lead Technician - Texas Tech University

Major/Essential Functions

• Demonstrate general woodworking skills and the use of related tools/machinery.
• Some experience & confidence training, demonstrating, lecturing, or teaching.
• Understanding of art and design.
• Some supervisory experience a plus. 
• Provide training and technical assistance to the students and faculty of Texas Tech SoA. 
• Always mirror and uphold the Standard Operating Procedures, PPE guidelines, and shop safety protocols. 
• Good communication skills, able to respond to the unique demands of art students and faculty and be able to switch gears easily depending on classes coming in. 
• Train, schedule, and monitor multiple graduate wood shop assistants each semester. 
• Understands and has an aptitude for technology & learning software: CNC router, 3D printers (resin/filament/powder), laser cutters. 
• Some experience maintaining, cleaning, repairing tools/machines. 
• Organize, plan, and execute work orders (ex. fabrication of tables, flat files, desks, cabinets, storage racks).
• Ability to perform very minor electrical tasks as needed.
• Assist with ordering by organizing lists (for purchases) regularly to keep shop stocked with any necessary inventory. This also includes keeping up with work order purchases, and class needs (with regards to wood purchases).
• Keep a clean and organized shop environment.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor or Masters Degree in Studio Art. Familiarity with laser cutters, 3D printers, and CNC routers. Understands or has an aptitude for technology and learning software. Has had some experience demonstrating or teaching. Some knowledge of art and object making. Knowledge of basic shop safety protocol.

Required Knowledge
Ability to perform skilled work required in the operation of a wood shop (basic wood working skills) and maintenance of equipment. Effective communication skills. Ability to train and supervise others and to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

About the Department and/or College

The School of Art is NASAD accredited and offers the BA in Art History, BA in Art, the BFA in Studio Art, Graphic Design, and Visual Studies (teacher certification), the MAE, the MFA in Studio Art, MA in Art History, and the Ph.D. in Fine Arts with a major in Art termed “Critical Studies and Artistic Practice.” A faculty of 31 full-time professors serves approximately 250 undergraduate students and 60 students involved in graduate study. The School has many prominent alumni, including Caleb Bennett, John Hitchcock, Rob Wilson, Ken Little, Real Musgrave, Lana Rigsby, and Cole Welter. Technical and administrative support includes a total of 13 staff positions. The School’s Visual Resource Center maintains art reference books, current art periodicals, instructional media, digital classrooms, and a legacy slide collection, as well as an expanding collection of digital images for teaching and research. Additional images are available through ARTStor and online at the university library. The program also supports the Landmark Arts Galleries and the Standing Room Only Photography Gallery (SRO).
