JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following are summary descriptions of the requirements of this performance work statement that include, but is not limited to:
- Receives incoming telephone calls and visitors, determines the nature of business, and tactfully refers calls to the appropriate staff member.
- Assist with receipt and distribution of incoming mail for the agency. Create, tab, and tab indexes, and other documents as needed. Typing is done consistently on a personal computer. Uses a variety of office equipment in conducting the work of the office, including but not limited to personal computers, typewriter, fax machine, copy machine, mail equipment, scanner, etc.
- Performs legal research, analyzing legal decisions, question. Opinions, rulings, and other issues affecting appeals. Performs research from reference sources including various United States Code, Code of Federal Regulations, Westlaw, and Board decisions.
- Prepare cases for hearing, including writing synopses of issues and noting case file deficiencies, researching legal issues, assisting at teleconferences and hearings. Initiates inquiries regarding case processing and responds to appeal inquiries on behalf of the Administrative Judge (AJ) of the office.
- Assist with responding to oral and written requests from Board offices, Congressional offices, the public, appellants, and their representatives, concerning potential, pending and past appeals and general Board procedures. Analyzes and evaluates initial appeals, determines timeless and jurisdictional issues and hearing requirements.
REQUIRED AND DESIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Recent experience in the administrative field or in a related legal clerical assistant area.
- Basic knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures in the legal/adjudicatory field.
- Familiar with legal documents.
- Familiar with legal databases such as LexisNexis, Westlaw and Pacer.
- Conducting legal research.
- Drafting synopses and correspondence.
- Proficient in operating office equipment, such as personal computers, copy machines, scanners, etc.
- Good communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills.
- High school diploma.
HOURS OF OPERATION:
8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (1/2 hour for lunch) Monday thru Friday except Federal holidays or when the facility is closed due to local or national emergencies and/or administrative closings.
