Job Title: Line Design Engineer
Location: Forest Park, GA 30297
Duration: 3 years
The Line Design Engineer 3 position requires 7-10 years of related experience and an accredited bachelor’s degree or professional engineer license. Responsible for applying engineering processes, design criteria, and software applications to design and construct high-voltage transmission lines (HVTL).
Supports estimate preparation, develops design options, and prepares construction specifications. Provide guidance, oversight, and quality assurance reviews for approved contractors as they develop design solutions, cost estimates, and construction packages for outsourced line design jobs. Job responsibilities include creating a safe work environment by putting safety first, understand the process used for HVTL planning, design, operation, construction, and maintenance, understanding the functions and activities of various internal departments involved in HVTL design, construction, and maintenance, understanding transmission line design practices and work processes, using all software applications used in HVTL design, understanding NESC and Southern Company design standards, supporting design standard and criteria development for the system, supporting construction and maintenance teams during day-to-day operations and during emergency restoration of failed equipment, providing quality assurance reviews for PLS[1]CADD line models and job construction package, estimating material for transmission projects, transmitting construction packages and supporting specifications. Skillsets and expertise required for this position include significant engineering knowledge, problem[1]solving skills, significant discretion making independent decisions based on procedure, basic TLD software knowledge, strong work ethic, positive attitude, and the ability to build effective relationships with plant staff, design engineering staff and/or vendors.
Essential Tasks: This position involves completing design packages for high-voltage transmission facilities (poles, towers, conductors, etc.). This individual works closely with other designers, drafters and maintenance personnel to prepare specifications and drawings for the construction department. This individual develops critical detailed schematic drawings by hand or using computers to show the line crew what work will need to be done. This individual may operate company vehicles (or rentals) and use tools such as measuring sticks and wheels, spotlights, hammers, and stakes. Employee spends 20% of time in the field and 80% of time in the office. Office work consists of communicating via email and phone, performing calculations, drafting reports, and creating and reviewing plans. The work week consists of forty hours per week with overtime as needed.
