Machinist
Summary of position:
Work includes set-up, operating and making tool adjustments for 4, and 5-axis Horizontal Mills. The ideal candidate will already be familiar with the setup and running of a Niigata and Mazak Horizontal Machines. The machinist works from blueprints, process sheets, and sketches to perform production tasks, which includes the cutting and shaping of metal to precision dimensions.
Essential functions and duties:
- Transfer programs from server to computer numerical control (CNC) machines, using DNC software.
- Set up and operate CNC machines to perform one or more machine functions on metal or plastic work-pieces.
- Mount, install, align and secure tools, attachments, fixtures, and work pieces on machines, using hand-tools and precision measuring instruments.
- Be able to perform in-process inspection of parts to ensure that they meet the requirements of the provided drawing.
- Adjust tool and work offsets to maintain part specifications.
- Check to ensure that work pieces are properly lubricated and cooled during machine operation.
- Review program specifications or blueprints to determine and set up machine operations and sequencing, and finished work pieces dimension.
- Listen to machines during operation to detect sounds such as those made by dull cutting tools or excessive vibration and adjust the machine to compensate.
- Remove and replace dull cutting tools.
- Lift work pieces to the machine either manually or with a hoist/crane.
- Monitor coolant level.
- Comply with policies and procedures in support of departmental and institutional health and safety programs.
Non-essential functions and duties:
- Set up future jobs while machines are running.
- Write simple programs for CNC control panels.
- Confer with supervisors or managers to resolve machine malfunctions or production errors.
- Sort shop orders into groups to maximize materials utilization and minimize machine setup time.
- Follows all safety and health guidelines/rules for the machine shop
- Keeps the work area clean by sweeping, wiping down machines, etc.
- Follows the 5S procedures for the department.
- Identify problems with the machine and report to supervisor and/or maintenance.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:

- Must have a high school diploma or GED.
- 6 - 8 years experience as a CNC machinist on 4 or 5 axis mills.
- Ability to quickly learn 4 & 5 axis mills (Mazak & Niigata).
- Must have basic computer skills (know how to use a computer).
- Must have a good understanding of the machining of both metals and plastics.
- Must have excellent interpersonal and written communication skills.
- Must be able to observe warning signs and signals within all areas of the company.
- Must own basic hand tools and measuring equipment.
Language skills:
- Ability to read and interpret training documents, safety rules, and procedural documents.
Mathematical skills:
- The ability to choose the correct mathematical methods or formulas to solve a problem.
Reasoning ability:
- The ability to apply general rules to specific problems to produce answers that make sense.
- The ability to combine pieces of information to form general rules or conclusions (includes finding a relationship among seemingly unrelated events).
