Report To: Assistant Director of Physical Plant
General Purpose of the Job:
The Maintenance Mechanic - Grounds and Custodial is an integral part of the Physical Plant team, responsible for ensuring the efficient operation and aesthetic upkeep of the university's infrastructure, grounds, and custodial services. This role includes overseeing custodial and landscaping contracts to maintain the functionality and appearance of campus facilities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Custodial Oversight:
- Oversee the execution and quality of custodial services across campus facilities.
- Coordinate with custodial contractors to ensure compliance with university standards and efficiency in cleaning practices.
- **Address custodial issues directly, either independently, in conjunction with other team members, or with the custodial vendor as needed. This includes performing cleaning tasks, not just overseeing others.**
- Manage supplies inventory and procure cleaning materials.
- Strong ability to work independently.
- Grounds Work:
- Oversee grounds maintenance duties, including mowing, weeding, planting, and leaf removal.
- **Address grounds maintenance issues directly, either independently, in conjunction with other team members, or with the grounds vendor as needed. This includes performing grounds tasks, not just overseeing others.**
- Supervise and coordinate landscaping projects, including planting flowers and shrubs and maintaining irrigation systems.
- Ensure the maintenance of campus aesthetics through regular inspections and coordinated efforts with grounds staff and contractors.
- Strong ability to work independently.
- Equipment Operation:
- Operate and maintain various tools and equipment required for maintenance, grounds work, and custodial tasks.
- Ensure the safe and proper use of tools and equipment at all times.
- Perform regular inspections and maintenance on all grounds keeping and custodial equipment.
- Maintenance:
- Conduct routine maintenance and repair tasks on university buildings, equipment, and systems.
- Ensure the timely completion of work orders and maintenance tasks.
- Perform preventive maintenance on equipment and systems to extend their lifespan.
- Collaborate with other maintenance staff to prioritize and schedule maintenance activities.
- Perform maintenance tasks as assigned.
- Team Collaboration:
- Lead and collaborate with maintenance, custodial, and grounds teams to ensure the overall functionality and appearance of the campus.
- Participate in departmental meetings and contribute to team development and a positive working environment.
Attendance:
Must be punctual and timely in meeting all performance requirements, including attendance standards and work deadlines, and beginning and ending assignments on time.
Onsite Requirement:
This position requires daily onsite support to meet the essential functions of the job. Onsite activities may include grounds maintenance, custodial oversight, and equipment operation.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Education and/or Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Proven experience in maintenance mechanics with additional experience in custodial and grounds management preferred.
- Familiarity with custodial best practices and landscaping.
Language Skills:
- Ability to read, understand, and communicate effectively regarding maintenance procedures and safety protocols.
Computer Skills:
- Basic proficiency in using computer systems for inventory management and work order tracking.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
- None required.
Other Skills and Abilities/Qualifications:
- Proficiency in using maintenance and landscaping tools and equipment.
- Ability to perform physical tasks, including lifting up to 50 pounds and working outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Excellent problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills.
- Flexibility to work occasional evenings or weekends as needed.
