Who We Are:
Johnson Controls is seeking a hands-on Mechanical Engineer to join our Water-Based Fire Suppression New Product Introduction (NPI) team at our R&D facility in Cranston, RI. At Cranston’s R&D center our engineering teams are responsible for the design, development, and certification of fire protection products which aid in life safety and property loss mitigation. This position is not eligible for Visa sponsorship.
What You Will Do:
In this role, responsibilities include but are not limited to: development of water-based fire protection products or system concepts and detailed designs, prototype generation and testing to international standards; conducts detailed studies to support design decisions; maintain records of design process in accordance with sound design practice and ISO requirements by performing duties directly or through subordinates.
How You Will Do It:
Analyzes product and equipment specifications to support decisions on initial design direction.
Stays on top of the company’s product offerings, within the area of involvement, to support decisions on initial design direction.
Maintains a working knowledge of the company’s manufacturing operations to understand the strengths and weaknesses of design concepts from the point of view of manufacturability within the company.
Conducts feasibility, cost, optimization, stress, fluids, and thermal analyses.
Provides technical information concerning manufacturing and/or processing techniques, materials, properties, and process advantages and limitations which affect plant and product engineering planning.
Stays ahead of the latest technology developments to ensure the company sees available opportunities for technical improvements in products and services and/or cost reductions.
Confers with research personnel and other technical functions as required to clarify and resolve problems and develop designs.
Maintains a working knowledge of general industry and specific agency approval requirements, to ensure compliance is maintained in designs.
Prepares and directs others in the preparation of design layouts, detailed drawings, and specifications.
Directs and coordinates prototype efforts.
Compiles and analyzes operational, test, and research data to establish and/or evaluate performance standards and limits for new or existing products.
Plans, develops, conducts and oversees experimental test programs.
Plans and holds meetings when appropriate.
Prepares and presents reports and presentations as needed.
Performs all elements of the job in accordance with established procedures.
What We Look For:
Required
Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, fire protection engineering, or a related technical discipline from an accredited university.
A minimum of 6 years relevant experience in mechanical piping and water supply products design.
Self-directed; able to strategize on test plans without established protocols; strong on-time and quality project delivery.
Experience with mechanical design software; AutoCAD, Inventor, SolidWorks, or similar design software
Proficiency in Microsoft Suite Applications (Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint) and Internet software and E-mail.
Preferred
Master’s Degree preferred.
10+ years relevant experience in mechanical piping and water supply products design with at least 3 years of which is directed toward design of sprinklers.
