Summary: Under the direct supervision of the physician and/or nurse manager coordinates assists and provides support to provider staff and patients before during and after exams and procedures in both clerical and clinical areas.
Responsibilities: Shifts focus quickly to support patients and/or co-workers as needs arise. Adjusts own practices in light of broader system needs and requirements. Changes approach �midstream� when something is not working. Responds in a flexible and cordial manner to different demands from various caregivers. Manages multiple tasks and changes rapidly one task to another when necessary. Continuously learns about topics related to the position (i.e. reads latest information attends classes observes procedures and asks questions). Seeks out challenging opportunities to advance personal learning. Trains and provides feedback to fellow staff members for improvement of job-related tasks. Provides suggestions to improve office/department efficiencies. Exceeds performance standards of medical assistants. Anticipates and acts on the needs of patients and co-workers. Modifies communication style to effectively address the feelings and concerns of patients and co-workers. Transfers unique patient knowledge from on encounter to another. Listens carefully to others to understand their needs and concerns. Informs patients using pre-printed instructions for routine clinic procedures simple diagnostic test results and/or treatment. Schedules patient appointments and follow-up tests taking into consideration medical concerns and patient circumstances as desires. Anticipates equipment and supply utilization well enough to maintain sufficient inventory PAR levels. Modifies computer applications and own computer skills to meet office needs. Handles difficult patient situations in a way that takes into consideration longer-term patient relationships. Directs or escorts patients to scheduled assigned physicians to balance the flow of office scheduling and to decrease wait time for patients. Reviews and verifies with patient accuracy and completion of self-admission history. Effectively prepares charts rooms and patients for physicians. Provides precise technical assistance to physicians related to the following procedures: EKG�s pulse oximetry finger sticks set up for suture removal dressing changes laser procedures endoscopic procedures bone marrow L.P.�s biopsies NG tube insertion and assists MD/RN with minor procedures. Assists in positioning/holding patients for invasive procedures such as Lumbar Puncture and Bone Marrow. Accurately processes and refers billing/insurance issues appropriately. Refers to RN or MD all patients with medical issues and handles/refers non-medical needs. Tracks laboratory or diagnostic results and sends normal results to patients and forwards normal/abnormal (highlighted by lab) to be reviewed and followed up by MD or RN. Adjusts own workload to support co-workers in meeting patient needs. Listens for key information in order to prioritize level of importance of task. Works efficiently during down times to keep work flowing. Manages time by preparing and organizing in advance. Utilizes sound judgement to recognize level of urgency and responds appropriately. Follows a logical line of questioning to understand who best meets the patients� needs. Handles potentially critical situations with speed and sensitivity. Anticipates questions/problems and prepares appropriate response. Collects all medical data in order to facilitate the physician�s ability to draw conclusions about the patient�s needs. Sees problems through to conclusion even in stressful unpleasant patient interactions. Informs physician or other appropriate caregiver immediately of any error. Follows-up on referrals to ensure high-level of patient care. Anticipates problems and informs physician in advance. Confronts problems directly by dealing with patients and co-workers face-to-face. Resolves emotionally disruptive situations and seeks assistance from co-workers when necessary. Manages one�s emotions and the potential effects on co-workers and patients. Deals calmly and politely with patients and co-workers under stress. Preserves the reputation of the team in the face of conflict with others. Negotiates necessary interdepartmental patient information and services to ensure proper patient care.
Other information: BASIC KNOWLEDGE: High School Diploma or equivalency � able to read write and speak English. Graduate of a Medical Assistant Training Program (9 months or longer) required (sterile conscience). Basic Life Support Certification. Demonstrated understand of personal computers. Exceptions to the Educational Requirements may be considered in the following circumstances: - An applicant with no formal Medical Assistant training but who has significant (minimum of three years) Medical Assistant experience in a comparable setting. - An applicant with a different type of medical training where the skills learned are considered to be directly transferable to the responsibilities of this position (LPN training Medical Student etc.). Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care patients with consideration of aging processes human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process. EXPERIENCE: One year experience as a Medical Assistant preferred. WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Patient care environment with exposure to communicable diseases. Hazards minimized by adherence to established safety procedures. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: None
