SUMMARY:

Provide for the safety of all students, staff, and visitors and the security of allDistrict and campus property and equipment. Patrol andmonitorschools and be available to respond to any property within theDistrict. Maintain campus security and protect District property against vandalism, illegal entry, and theft, and respond to emergencies or calls for service.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

Security Operations

• Respond to campuses for assistance as needed.

• Assist campus administrators with emergency lock-down drills, and review of Campus Emergency Operation Plan (EOP).

• Act as "substitute" security specialist, on middle schools and high schools in the absence of the campus specialist, as required.

• Investigate unusual conditions and take immediate emergency action as appropriate.

• Check-in with each campus administrator/staff to address and assist with concern and or security issues.

• Work closely with campus and administration officials to develop an attitude sensitive to the need for creating and maintaining a safe and secure environment. 

• Train or assist in training District personnel in appropriate security procedures.

• Assist staff, police, and emergency personnel in handling emergencies or disruptive situations. Intercept and appropriately handle unauthorized visitors.

• Notify administrators, police, and/or other emergency personnel of any emergency, dangerous situations, or unusual circumstances; to include evidence of substance abuse, child abuse, child neglect, medical conditions, or mental health crises.

• Demonstrate professional and ethical behavior working with students, parents, school District personnel, and outside agencies associated with the school.

Safety

• Protect students, staff, and visitors from dangerous threats.

• Patrol and monitor campuses and surrounding areas in accordance with District patrol patterns to ensure the safety and well-being of students, staff and visitors, and the security of facilities.

• Patrol school corridors, locker rooms, restrooms, assembly and athletic facilities, gymnasiums, bus loading areas, and other campus locations in order to observe student behavior and prevent violations or unsafe activities.

Communication

• Maintain effective and constructive relationships with the campus principals, campus staff, and District staff. 

Other

• Wear District provided uniform.

• Participate in ongoing training and continuing education.

• Maintain accurate and complete records as required by TEA and the District; file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required. Maintain daily Activity Checklist.

• Prepare incident and other miscellaneous reports about crimes against the District property and offenses against District personnel or students as requested.

• Report and provide information to school administrators and other authorized personnel regarding opportunities for improved campus/community relations.

Policy, Reports, and Law

• Maintain confidentiality.

• Prepare and deliver written and oral presentations.

• Develop and maintain systems for retrieval of information in support of all programs.

• Compile, maintain, file, and secure all physical and computerized reports, records, and other required documents.

• Pursue Professional Development activities for self and assigned staff; ensure that Professional Development activities are aligned with District goals and initiatives and current professional research.

• Comply with all policies, operating procedures, legal requirements, and verbal and written directives.

• Comply with the Professional Code of Ethics and Standard Practices for Texas Educators.

• Follow District safety protocols and emergency procedures.

• Perform other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Certification:

• Texas License to Carry or must be obtained within 60 days of employment.

• Valid Texas Driver’s License

• High School Diploma or GED

• Bachelor’s degree preferred

• DPS School Safety Certification required or must be obtained within 90 days of employment.

• Level 3 Security License (Armed) required or must be obtained within 30 days of employment.

Experience:

• Successful related work experience

• Three (3) years law enforcement, school marshal, military police, or other experience as commissioned peace officer preferred.

SPECIAL KNOWLEGDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

• Ability to pass psychological assessment, initially and recurring.

• Ability to pass random drug screenings.

• Ability to pass criminal background check.

• Ability to meet physical demands of the position.

• Required to carry exposed handgun on duty and on school property. 

• Ability to meet minimum firearmsproficiencythroughinitialand quarterly course qualifications.

• Ability toparticipateand meet demands of ongoing training requirements specific to school district safety.

• Ability to de-escalate situations when possible

• Ability to keep calm under stressful conditions 

• Must be available to be on-call to respond toafter-hoursalarms.

• Ability to effectively communicate written and verbal communication, able to produce acceptable written reports.

• Ability to make sound judgments and reasonable decisions under duress.

• Knowledge of NIMS and FEMA protocols

• Knowledge of Standard Response Protocol (preferred)

• Knowledge of physical security practices.

• Knowledge of state and federal rules, regulations, or requirementspertaining tosecurity and safety in public facilities.

• Proficient in security camera software and computer skills (Excel, Word, Outlook, Report writing)

• Strong observational skills, fact-gathering, and investigative skills.  

• Able tomaintainconfidentiality. 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITES:

• Assigned staff authorized under the direction of the Head of Security Operations or Director of District Safety

MENTAL/PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS:

Tools/Equipment Used: 

• District vehicle, firearms, handcuffs, security equipment, two-way radio, alarm system and other security equipment, fire extinguisher

• Standard office equipment including personal computer and peripherals

Posture:

• Prolonged standing and sitting; occasional bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting

Motion:

• Strenuous walking and climbing; frequent keyboarding/mouse, prolonged driving

Lifting:

• Frequent moderate lifting and carrying (15–44 pounds).

Environment: 

• Work outside and inside, on slippery or uneven walking surfaces; frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, dust, noise, vibration; exposure to electrical hazards; work around moving objects or vehicles; work alone; may work irregular hours; occasional prolonged hours; frequent districtwide travel.

• Work to be completed on-site from assigned school or building.

• No remote work.

• Specific hearing and visual requirements; may be subject to adverse and hazardous working conditions including violent and armed confrontations; ability to control sudden violent or extreme physical acts of others and exhibit rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously
