The Risk Awareness Engineer/Specialist O&P is responsible for managing the awareness of entity-level risk for the SERC Region. This awareness includes the development of registered entity Inherent Risk Assessments (IRA), Entity Risk Profiles (ERP), Compliance Oversight Plans (COP), and a comprehensive Entity Risk Summary to capture relevant data, trends, and analysis. The successful candidate will also participate and lead Internal Controls Assessments of registered entities and use their knowledge of entity-level risks to deploy resources across the SERC organization in the mitigation of risks to the bulk electric system.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Lead or participate as a subject matter expert in the process of creating and refreshing SERC registered entities IRA, ERP, COP, and Entity Risk Summaries.
- Identify and analyze risks that have potential impact to the Bulk Electric System, which includes SERC Regional, Localized, and Entity-level risk.
- Lead or participate on registered entity outreach activities, promoting the understanding of the results of their IRA and COP.
- Collaborate with Reliability Assurance Managers to coordinate compliance monitoring activities and schedules around a registered entity's IRA and COP results.
- Review and evaluate registered entity internal controls as part of a comprehensive risk-based decision-making process.
- Respond to inquiries from registered entities, other SERC staff, other regional entities and NERC.
- Maintain awareness and oversight of SERC internal operational risk mitigation efforts in identifying BPS risks and leveraging internal departments to deploy their resources toward risk mitigation.
- Provide subject matter expertise to Outreach, Assistance, and training activities.
- Provide subject matter expertise to activities in Compliance Monitoring, Compliance Investigations, Registration and Certification activities, the BES Exceptions process; registered entity Compliance Assessment and Mitigation processes, Enforcement activities; and the Standards Development process.
- Provide leadership and expertise among peers at ERO Enterprise collaboration groups, as requested.
- Act as liaison with external entities such as regulatory entities, registered entities, and stakeholder groups as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
- Four year and/or higher educational degree in Engineering, or equivalent experience.
- Five years of experience in electric utility industry with background in regulatory and/or compliance activities in a related field.
- One of the following certifications is desired:
- Professional Engineer license (PE)
- NERC Certified System Operator (NCSO)
- Working knowledge of Bulk Electric System engineering, operations, and technical issues as they apply to NERC Reliability Standards.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Project management skills.
- Ability to work with and analyze data-intensive and detailed information, and to draw meaningful conclusions from that information.
- Working knowledge of NERC Reliability Standards and SERC regional standards.
- Computer skills, proficient with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.
- Effective communication skills (face-to-face, telephone, written and email, and presentation skills).

SALARY/BENEFITS:
The salary range for this position is DOE. We offer a generous PTO package; paid holidays; medical, dental, vision, life, short-term and long-term disability insurance, and a 401(k) plan with an organization contribution of up to 14%.
