Online Math Tutor (Remote)
BookNook is seeking passionate educators to join our tutoring community as independent contractors, working up to 30 hours per week. BookNook tutors are on the front lines of working to close the opportunity gap for K-8 students during a key period of their educational journey.
BookNook’s Math programs are scheduled to start in the Fall of 2024.
Our online tutors conduct live, synchronous online tutoring sessions using the BookNook platform and video conferencing software. This is an exciting opportunity to have a direct, positive impact on students on their path to achieving success in Math.
Position Specifics:
- Subject: K-8th grade math
- Position Type: 1099-eligible independent contractor
- Pay Rate: $20 per hour ($10 per 30-minute session)
- Schedule: Up to 30 hours per week based on the tutor's availability and the number of active tutoring programs. Schedules may vary based on school requests.
- Sessions are held only on weekdays (no weekends) and can be before, during, or after school.
- Each program is 8-16 weeks and tutors are expected to commit to a full program with the same group of students throughout.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct virtual tutoring sessions in Math using the BookNook platform. Lessons for math sessions include inquiry-based instruction, with a strong focus on explicit instruction. Curriculum and content will be provided within the platform.
- Manage student behavior and engagement throughout sessions.
- Create a safe, respectful learning environment.
- Maintain positive relationships with students throughout the entire schedule of the program.
- Document observations for each session.
Requirements:
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- Experience teaching/tutoring K-8 students in mathematics, which may include, but is not limited to:
- having a current/previous teaching license;
- serving as a substitute teacher or teaching assistant, paraprofessional, professor, instructor;
- AND/OR tutoring for another tutoring company in the content area of math.
- Classroom experience and/or online teaching/tutoring experience in math is preferred.
- Knowledge of and experience in mathematical best practices, specifically for intervention and assisting students struggling with mathematics.
- Commitment to teaching in alignment with the provided curriculum lesson design, structure, and strategies.
- Access to a computer, webcam, and reliable, high-speed internet connection with a speed of at least 10mbps is a necessity for the position.
- Ability to build meaningful connections with students to create an encouraging and motivating environment.
Our Hiring Process
- Apply: Submit an application online.
- Interview: Applicants invited to our one-way interview round will be asked to submit videos answering questions designed to help us evaluate their experience and educational knowledge. The interview portion is intended to be completed in about 30-45 minutes, similar to a face-to-face interview.
- Hiring Decision: After the interview round, our team will notify applicants within 5 business days of the decision to move forward with the onboarding process.
- Onboarding: Applicants selected for onboarding will be asked to complete:
- A tutor independent contractor agreement and related onboarding documentation.
- A paid certification course to learn how to navigate the BookNook platform.
- One or more state-required, fingerprint-based background checks, which can take up to 2-6 weeks to process depending on the state/district background check requirements.
Upon successful completion of onboarding, available appointments will be offered to tutors through our scheduling platform.
- Note: Qualified BookNook Tutors are not guaranteed immediate or consistent tutoring work, but we are constantly adding new programs to our schedule. Math programs will begin in Fall 2024.
