Beth Israel Milton is currently seeking a full-time Operating Room Service Leader.
Summary:
Contributes to the Hospital’s mission by serving the dual role of an OR Registered Nurse and Service Line Specialist. This professional licensed position will have an impact on the OR’s operations by keeping current with efficient and clinically effective equipment and materials available for the service line and ensuring smooth operations of the service line by preempting and training and ensuring appropriate supplies and equipment are available as needed. This position will also have a dramatic impact on physician and staff satisfaction by monitoring and communicating the physician preferences for service line procedures. The three service leaders will cover:
1. Ortho, neuro spine and podiatry, ent
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
· Assess physical, mental, and psychological status of patient using age-appropriate knowledge within surgical specialty and patients served.
· Plans, evaluates and supervises care of all patients assigned and within surgical specialty assigned.
· Works collaboratively with other disciplines in care of patients to provide excellent service to patients served.
· Coordinates and participates in formal and informal educational programs, in services and performance improvement activities to improve technical skills within and outside of surgical specialty assigned.
· Responsible for continued learning and application to practice within and outside of surgical specialty assigned.
· Synthesizes patient care information to formulate appropriate nursing diagnosis.
· Responsible to provide patient and family education to population served.
· Work practice reflects philosophy purpose and policies of the hospital and department based upon evidence based best practices and AORN standards.
· Operates and plans Perioperative patient care, equipment instrumentation, information systems, preference cards, etc. within the assigned surgical specialty.
· Collaborates with surgeons, staff, OR nurse leadership, inventory specialist, anesthesia and outside vendors to ensure a safe surgical intervention after intervention/cost effective value analysis process utilized.
· Coordinates care in conjunction with PAT, materials, OR and PACU to ensure safe and proactive patient planning by addressing needs for the case.
· Reviews and updates preference cards within specialty and physicians served.
· Schedules regular meetings with the surgeons within their services.
· Attends OR surgical steering committee meetings and reports monthly.
· Works closely with the OR inventory specialist to keep equipment maintained and organized and stored appropriately.
· Maintains listings of materials and equipment and updates staff on any repair, follow-ups; checks supply inventory for expiration dates weekly.
· Reviews procedures booked in advance and follows up with sales reps and OR team as needed to discuss equipment, instrumentation, and/or implants needed for new/routine procedures.
· Coordinates with OR educator to mentor new Operating Room Surgical techs/ RNs within specialty.
· Performs regular inventory assessments and communicates with the team and follow up regarding concerns.
· Identify a staff member to cover the services in their absence.
· Recommends par levels for Service Line related supplies, with a sensitivity to cost containment, avoiding waste and recognizing limited space.
· Reviews surgical schedule in advance and ensures availability of necessary equipment and supplies.
· Communicates changes in surgical schedule and equipment availability to surgeons and their office staff.
· Work closely with central supply team to ensure that kits are correct and evaluated for size, updates and necessity.
Professional Commitment Requirements:
· On-call: Participates in on-call rotation.
· Schedule requirements: Subject to change based upon needs of the business/department.
· Must work at least four (4) days per week.
· Keep abreast of developments in their services and share information with staff.

Experience/Knowledge/Skills Required
· Evidence of continuing education; at least 20 CEU’s per year-BSN or Bachelors classes may be substituted. If bachelors attained, have 20 CEU’s per evaluation year.
· Demonstrated proficiency in basic nursing process.
· 3-5 years’ experience with demonstrated skill to circulate and scrub in one or more surgical specialties.
· CNOR Certification within 2 years of appointment and maintained
· The RN will exhibit demonstrated skill in the clinical services which results in optimal safe patient care management within care planned and provided.
· Proactive, interpersonal written and verbal communication skills-evidenced based and best practice.
· Ability to prioritize responsibilities in order to remove barriers, solve problems and plan service delivery.
Education Required
· Graduate of accredited school of nursing.
Registration/Certification
· Current RN Massachusetts License
· BLS Certification maintained
· ACLS strongly suggested and preferred.
· Specialty Certification (preferred)
