SUMMARY:The Operations and Maintenance Tech 1 in South Bends Public Works Department is responsible for a variety of entry-level tasks related to the operation and upkeep of water treatment facilities. This role involves performing manual, skilled, and semi-skilled labor to maintain pumping equipment and buildings, as well as keeping precise daily records of chemical levels and plant status. Key duties include monitoring facility operations data, assisting with the maintenance of water system equipment, repairing or replacing damaged motors and pumps, and maintaining grounds around well houses and pumping stations. The technician also performs maintenance on the SCADA system and handles the delivery of hazardous and nonhazardous chemicals. The Operations and Maintenance Tech 1 ensures the reliability and functionality of the water treatment infrastructure, contributing to the delivery of safe drinking water to the community. By performing routine maintenance tasks, monitoring chemical feeds, and assisting with equipment repairs, this position helps prevent disruptions and ensures continuous operation. The technicians role is essential for maintaining water quality and compliance with regulatory standards, supporting the overall mission of providing high-quality water services to the residents of South Bend.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:This list represents the types of duties required by the position. Other duties may be assigned as reasonably expected.
- Monitors and records facility operations data from Meters, Totalizers, Indicators, and Analyzers Collecting water samples.
- Assists with the operation and maintenance of a variety of water system equipment including valves, chemical feeders, pumps, buildings, and grounds.
- Collects water samples.
- Repairs or replaces damaged motors and pumps.
- Cleans, paints, mops, mows lawn, shovels and maintains grounds around all well houses, pumping stations, filtration plants.
- Maintains pumping operations to ensure chemical feeds are met as assigned.
- Performs maintenance, troubleshoots, and repairs to S.C.A.D.A. system and components.
- Maintains and repairs plumbing lines and fixtures including copper solder, PVC socket and compression fittings.
- Takes delivery of hazardous and nonhazardous chemicals at all stations.

QUALIFICATIONS:To perform this position successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty in a satisfactory manner. REQUIREMENTS:
- High school diploma or GED; or an equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities sufficient to perform the essential duties of the class.
- Minimum 1-year experience in a maintenance and/or mechanical position.
- Must be available to work overtime and standby when required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES PREFERRED:
- Knowledge of basic principles and practices involved in water treatment, distribution, chemistry and math.
- Knowledgeable and capable of servicing requirements for mechanical equipment.
- Skilled in operation of arious hand and power tools, inspection of mechanical equipment, performing general maintenance, and communications, sufficient to exchange or convey information and receive and follow work direction.
- Ability to accurately read and record operations data, understand laboratory analysis, understand and follow oral and written instructions, follow safety procedures, establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff and the public.
- Must demonstrate proficiency in the fields of general mechanical, plumbing, and electrical maintenance by passing an exam.
- Must have the ability to respond quickly to emergency situations and to use sound judgment in adverse working conditions.
- The ability to perform accurate basic math computations is required.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSE, REGISTRATION:
Valid Drivers License and acceptable driving record.
High School diploma or GED; and equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities sufficient to perform the essential duties of the class.Required.
