Job Summary
Genera is a fast-growing manufacturer of sustainable packaging and fiber products from locally sourced agricultural crops. As a Packaging Design Engineer you will be responsible for the creation of attractive and functional food and consumer packaging made from thermoformed fiber. You will be part of the Innovation Center that is responsible for new product development from ideas through prototyping and customer testing. You will need learn the qualities of thermoformed fiber and create innovative designs that meet customer's needs while staying within the limits of thermoformed fiber. You will need to learn the basics of thermoformed fiber production and how it may impact product design. The results of your work will be visible at restaurants and grocery stores across North America.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Develop innovative, functional, and visually appealing packaging designs for applications in restaurants, fresh and frozen foods, and consumer goods.
- Work with Genera's customers to determine the goals of their packaging and develop designs to meet these goals.
- Work with Innovation Center staff and Genera's sales team to review and revise designs, assist in the production of prototype tooling and prototype parts, performing various tests on the packaging, and assisting in onsite trials of the prototypes in customers' application.
- Make recommendations based on the results of testing and feedback from customers and Innovation Center staff.
Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Packaging Design, Industrial Design, or a related field.
- At least 5 years of experience in packaging design, preferably in food or foodservice design.
- Expert knowledge in one or more design software packages such as Adobe creative suite, Fusion 360, and SolidWorks.
- Strong technical background with experience in designing for structural performance.
- Familiarity with various food and foodservice packaging materials and production techniques.
- Have a keen eye for detail, strong aesthetic sensibility, and the ability to translate customer needs into visually stunning packaging designs.
- Demonstrate good communication and collaboration skills.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently required to talk and/or listen. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to grasp, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls, to reach with hands and arms, climb ladders and stairs, balance, stoop, kneel and crouch and push or pull on objects. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. This position will require the use of safety equipment and clothing. Where noise levels exceed allowable limits, hearing protection is required and provided. There may be prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer. Must be able to access various departments of a given location.
