We are hiring a Paralegal for one of our clients in Newark, NJ.
Job Description:
Under supervision of the Deputy Director or other supervisory official in the Division of Consumer Affairs, performs legal research to obtain criminal history documents, medical records; utilizes municipal and Superior Court records access program; contacts police departments, health care facilities, and other entities; prepares subpoenas; and monitors on-going criminal proceedings and provides updates; performs other related work as required.
Examples of work:
- Obtains criminal history documents, including, but not limited to, complaint/summons, dispositions, hearing transcripts, plea forms, judgments of convictions, indictments/accusations, schedules of court proceedings and hearings, and law enforcement investigation reports. Obtains medical records, including, but not limited to, treatment and billing records. May obtain other records, as required.
- Utilizes municipal and Superior Court records access programs to obtain requested documents.
- Contacts police departments, health care facilities, and other entities to obtain requested records.
- Prepares subpoenas to obtain requested records, if necessary.
- Monitors on-going criminal proceedings, and provides updates as obtained.
- Conducts legal research.
- Prepares correspondence and/or reports on legal matters, cases, and judicial proceedings.
- Synopsizes transcripts of proceedings and other documents for use by the legal and/or administrative staff.
- Assists in the liaison activities with government agencies and the legal staff.
- Acts as custodian of files where necessary.
- Manages case files by organizing and maintaining such files, and establishes and implements systems of retrieval of file information.
- Organizes and maintains research information in order to ensure ready accessibility to such information and retrieves such information upon request.
- Assists in the instruction and guidance of clerical support personnel when directly related to the legal functions being performed.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and computerized information system used by the agency, office, or related units.
Education required:
- Graduation from an accredited college with a Bachelor's degree.
NOTE: Applicants who do not possess a Bachelor's degree may substitute an Associate's degree as a Legal Assistant or in Paralegal Studies or, successful completion of a two (2) year approved course in Paralegal Training at a recognized educational institution for two (2) years of college education.
Work hours:
- 7-hour workday between 7:30A-5:00P
- Lunch Duration: 30-minute lunch 2 breaks morning & afternoon
