About the Job
The Patient Account Coordinator is responsible for the coordination of billing activities between Patient Accounting, Information Resources, and the electronic billing vendors. This position interacts with the Patient Accounting teams to resolve billing problems and rejections. It is responsible for general ledger and cash balancing, and the production of Patient Accounting reports for Midland, Clare, Gladwin, and EMS. This position coordinates third party audits and writes and executes downloads as requested by Patient Accounting management. Attendance at state association meetings and participation in department QIP teams to facilitate and improve the billing process is required.
Responsibilities:- (25%)*Coordinate billing activities. Includes review of daily reports (i.e., Accounts Not Selected, White Out Audit Report), maintaining logs, send and verify electronic transmissions and acceptance by third parties, interaction with Information Resources for daily bill printing, coordination and execution of special rebilling functions. Works with vendors and third parties to resolve problems and rejections. Testing and approval of system upgrades, modifications and TCN’s.
- (25%)*Balancing of daily cash, monthly cash worksheet preparation and balancing to G/L for Midland, Clare, and Gladwin.
- (25%)*Preparation and analysis of the Patient Accounting Department Reports for Midland, Clare, Gladwin, Midland EMS, and Gladwin EMS. This also includes Finance Reports, MPAA Surveys, MyMichigan Health Executive Summary, etc. These reports are distributed to the CFO’s and Finance Committees.
- (25%)*Coordinates all audits, which occur in the Patient Accounting Department: Notifies agencies of audit policies; schedules audits; collaborates with the auditors, Medical Records, and department managers to resolve any discrepancies.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Interacts with other hospital departments, billers, collectors, and manager to resolve billing problems.
Write and execute downloads as requested by Patient Accounting management.
Attend state association meetings such as MPAA, Medicare Part A Advisory, etc. Attend and participate in Patient Accounting Team meetings to improve quality and QIP problems.
Physician enrollments. Miscellaneous: Update reference manuals Edit and update various billing files such as insurance comp/plans, BFM, F/C, CDM’s, system Special projects.
Other miscellaneous duties, such as other facility billings, DRG validation and review, and monthly review of Aged Accounts.

Certifications and Licensures:N/A
Required Education:High School Diploma or GED is required
Five years in Patient Accounting setting preferred. Additional computer skills and medical terminology preferred
Associate’s Degree in Accounting or related field preferred
Other Information:EXPERIENCE, TRAINING AND SKILLS:
5 years work experience with at least two years in Patient Accounting setting.
Two years in a computerized setting which utilizes various PC software required.
Two years formal training beyond high school or comparable on the job experience required Human relations skills, organizational skills, expertise in communication, both verbally and written, and outstanding PC skills required.
Mandatory tuberculosis (TB) testing as required. Mandatory Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) training must be completed annually according to the Exposure Control Plan.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as, trauma, grief and death. Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position. Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description. Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted device(s). Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time. May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching. Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material. Must follow MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required. Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake. Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling. May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis. Physical Demand Level: Sedentary. Must be able to occasionally (0-33% of the workday) lift or carry 0-10 lbs.
