Position Summary
The Patient Financial Analyst serves as the subject matter expert for patient billing and collections processes, optimizing return on outstanding patient accounts receivable. This role provides quality oversight of key financial processes that enable patient billing to occur and provides measured metrics for the Financial Services team. A successful Patient Financial Analyst has excellent written and verbal communications skills, ability to apply critical thinking to nuanced patient situations, initiates recommendations in response to measured performance data, and executes in a timely and accurate manner.
Accountabilities & Responsibilities
- Serve as a subject matter expert for patient billing and collections processes
- Support relationship with third-party collections vendor including generating report for outstanding patient balances, sending placements, status updates, and evaluation of vendor effectiveness
- Measure progress towards outstanding patient accounts receivable, escalating barriers to collections as appropriate
- Review patient revenue exception and cost change requests
- Provide oversight for mature debt service holds
- Initiate outbound patient contact related to breached payments, incorrect addresses, and information-related barriers impacting the billing cycle
- Maintain oversight of the Patient Assistance Consideration (PAC) program and provide ongoing metrics related to number of patients served
- Develop, generate, and distribute patient billing analytics and reports, which serve to measure organizational efficiency
- Monitor Financial Services team performance and productivity, partnering with the team’s supervisor & manager on process improvement opportunities
- Collaborate with leadership to draft and maintain financial service procedures, policies, and training
- Assist with testing, implementation, and troubleshooting of new processes and/or technological systems
- Perform all job duties while maintaining compliance with all appropriate regulatory requirements including the SEC, IRS and HIPAA
- Other duties as assigned
Education & Experience
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience
- 5 – 7 years’ experience in reimbursement with extensive knowledge of medical insurance benefits, payer and/or patient billing, verification of benefits, prior and reauthorization, or collections
Preferred:
- Experience with Brightree
- Experience with Microsoft Excel, PowerBI, and other reporting and analytic tools
- Knowledge of healthcare claims data formats and concepts
Knowledge & Skills
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Knowledge of insurance benefits, medical billing, verification of benefits, prior authorization, and/or claims processing
- Ability to complete multiple tasks concurrently with effective time management
- Demonstrates initiative and independent work with minimal supervision
- Able to identify improvements and propose solutions
- Leverages critical-thinking skills, within defined work processes and policies, in response to nuanced situations
- Exceptional written documentation skills – clear, complete, and concise
- High attention-to-detail and accuracy
- Thrive in a fast-paced, continuously changing environment
- Problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and seek support to resolve issues quickly and accurately
- Proficiency using MS Word, Excel and Outlook
