joining our team as a Pavement Maintenance Worker in the Public
Works Department.
Responsibilities of Position
Pavement Maintenance Workers are part of a team that performs manual and
skilled work in the repair and maintenance of streets, alleys,
rights-of-ways, and other City owned infrastructure. They operate heavy
equipment (i.e., dump trucks, end loaders, backhoes, skid steers with
various attachments, vibratory drum rollers, road graders, asphalt patch
trucks), small equipment, and hand tools to perform hot mix asphalt
repairs, patch potholes, profile pavement bumps, and complete minor
sidewalk repairs. They participate in the City's snow & ice removal
efforts and respond to other emergencies and callouts that may require
working up to 16-hour shifts at all hours, with little to no advance
notice, and assist with the yard waste collection program.
Maintenance Worker positions may be filled at the I or II level. Level
II positions require the ability to operate Public Works equipment on a
regular basis without supervision. New hires will be paid at the
Maintenance Worker I level until successfully demonstrating equipment
operation competency through proficiency testing or completion of the
Public Works Department training program.
The anticipated July 1, 2024, base salaries are Maintenance Worker I:
$27.50 and Maintenance Worker II: $29.75 per hour, plus an excellent

Required Qualifications
- Education equivalent to a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Work experience in the maintenance and repair of pavement surfaces
such as concrete or asphalt.
- Experience operating equipment commonly used in pavement repairs.
- Ability to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions.
- Ability to work emergency operations outside of normal working
hours.
- A valid state issued drivers license and an acceptable driving
record.
- A State of Illinois Class B CDL license without air brake
restriction is required within a timeframe approved by the Pavement
Supervisor.

- Ability to perform essential functions that require physical agility
as noted in the job description, with or without accommodation.
Preferred Qualifications
- Completion of a two-year vocational or training program in a related
area such as Highway Careers Construction Training Program (HCCTP)
or qualifying co-op or apprenticeship program.

Drug screening, driving record review, and ongoing random drug testing
