Description:
A perioperative nurse is a registered nurse (R.N.) who works in the operating room. Sometimes called a surgical or an operating room nurse, this specialized nurse cares for patients before, during, and after surgery.
In the perioperative setting, the perioperative nurse may serve in pre-op with patients prior to surgery, as a circulating nurse managing the overall nursing care in the operating room, or in recovery providing patients post-surgical care.
Scope of practice
Perioperative nurses use a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to patient care, assisting surgeons and surgical teams to care for a patient before, during, and after surgery.
Specifically, responsibilities and duties of a perioperative nurse include:
- Working with patients prior to surgery to complete paperwork, and help answer questions or calm fears about surgery
- Monitoring a patient's condition during and after surgery
- Selecting and passing instruments and supplies to the surgeon during operation (sometimes referred to as a scrub nurse)
- Managing the overall nursing care in the operating room to help maintain a safe and comfortable environment (sometimes referred to as a circulating nurse)
- Educating patients on best practices for recovery, including pain management and keeping wounds clean
- Cleaning surgical equipment and operating rooms to maintain a sterile environment
The perioperative nurse to prepare instruments and equipment for surgical procedures, as well as providing patients with perioperative care. In this role, your duties will include preparing operating rooms, liaising with healthcare professionals on patient care, and providing patients with perioperative care.
To ensure success, perioperative nurses should possess extensive experience in providing patients with, pre-op, intra-op, post-op care and exhibit specialized knowledge of sterilization techniques. First-class candidates demonstrate excellent communication skills and the ability to provide a high level of care under pressure.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Providing surgical patients with perioperative care in recovery, procedure, and operating rooms.
- Stocking operating rooms with sterile surgical equipment, linens, and supplies.
- Developing and implementing nursing care plans for surgical patients.
- Preparing patients for surgery by cleaning and disinfecting areas to be operated on.
- Assisting surgeons during surgical procedures.
- Applying sterile techniques in handling medical instruments and equipment pre-, during, and post-surgery.
- Collaborating with surgical teams and other medical professionals on patient medication and post-surgery care.
- Updating patient files and medical records.
- Assisting with the ordering, maintenance, and safe storage of surgical equipment and supplies.
- Providing patients with post-surgery care instructions and answering questions.
Peri Operating Room Nurse Requirements:
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree (BSN), preferred, but not required.
- State-approved Registered Nurse (RN).
- Certification as an Operating Room Nurse (CNOR) preferred, but not required.
- 3-5 years of experience as a nurse providing perioperative care.
- Exceptional knowledge of surgical instruments and equipment, as well as sterile techniques.
- Proficiency in recordkeeping and patient management systems
- Advanced proficiency in developing and implementing perioperative nursing care plans.
- Ability to collaborate with surgical teams and healthcare specialists.
- In-depth knowledge of best practices in healthcare.
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills
Wage: $ 40.00 - $45.00 per hour
