JOB SUMMARY
Under the supervision and direction of Pharmacy Director, Manager, and/or Pharmacist, the Pharmacy Buyer performs diverse purchasing support activities. Maintains purchasing inventory control responsibilities, reviews and/or documents usage of high cost and short supply inventory, maintains interdepartmental billing records, processes returns, documents financial data and/or clinical/operational monthly data tracking. Also, performs other general clerical/administrative and pharmacy technician duties.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
High School Diploma or Equivalent
Pharmacy technician experience, especially knowing what the brand and generic names are.
Illinois Pharmacy Technician License
JOB DUTIES
Purchases or requisitions pharmaceuticals and solutions.
Prepares/submits purchase requisitions and orders. Uses electronic ordering systems or telephone. Contacts requesting department for details when necessary.
Originates correspondence and telephone calls to obtain delivery dates and other
pertinent data.
Recommends economical shipment methods consistent with delivery requirements. May
suggest alternatives, considering quantity, prices, and requested delivery dates.
Coordinates physical inventory supply to assure that par level supply quantities are
maintained.
Arranges with other pharmacies for lending, borrowing, and returning of critical
pharmaceuticals.
Maintains purchasing records for expense monitoring.
Purchases through group purchasing and pre-established contracts to maximize savings.
Maintains inventory purchasing and monthly financial data records.
Organizes purchasing data files to include inventory purchases and credit returns.
Assists with monthly summary and analysis of medication purchases by volumes and
therapeutic drug category.
Inspects inventory for expired, recalled medications and returns applicable inventory to
appropriate vendors for credit.
Reviews and resolves Receiving and Accounts Payable inquiries.
Types correspondence and prepares reports and statistics.
Updates and maintains departmental standard requisition system.
Maintains contract files, catalogs, updated references, quote files, and various other records.
Participates in drug distribution process.
Receives, unpacks, checks, inspects, prices, and stores shipments of pharmaceuticals.
Maintains departmental supplies/equipment and individual work area.
Fills in for technician as needed.
Fills stock requests.
Notifies Director, Manager, Supervisor, and/or Pharmacist of problems.
Informs the Pharmacy Director, Manager, Supervisor and/or pharmacist of price changes and
back-orders. Arranges conferences to discuss specifications, usages, and alternatives.
Reviews incoming vendor and item data, performs entry and maintenance on existing
systems, and informs appropriate personnel of information.
Reviews, checks, and processes all drug recalls and informs the Pharmacy Director, Manager,
Supervisor, and/or Pharmacist.
Provides available product information to department heads.
Problem-solves inventory supply issues and determines alternate suppliers.
