About the Job
The basic function of the Pharmacy Technician II is to assist the pharmacist in performing his/her distributive and professional duties. Responsibilities include assisting in the dispensing of drugs, transport and delivery of drugs, repackaging of drugs, charging and crediting of medications, operation and restocking of automated dispensing devices, restocking of medications and non-drug supplies, answering the telephone and responding to staff requests at the inpatient window. All these functions are performed under the supervision, review and approval of a pharmacist.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT(S):
- High school or GED diploma is required.
- Academic coursework or experience in the medical science field is preferred but not required.
- At least one year of similar experience in another healthcare organization, retail pharmacy or a position which involved comparable or related duties in another service industry.
- Position Designation: Technician II – minimum 1 year experience as pharmacy technician.
- Must become a Certified Pharmacy Technician by 18 months from hire date and maintain certified status thereafter.
- Proficiency in any two (2) Primary Work Areas including, but not limited to: (a) Cart fill (b) Controlled Substances (c) Decentralized Duties (d) IV Room Cleaning and Restocking (e) Inventory Management (f) Purchasing (g) Unit Dose Packaging and Labeling.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION:
Pharmacy Technician II
- Works independently, requesting assistance when needed.
- Performs all duties as required of the position and the department, including but not limited to:
- Accurately obtain and prepare medications for dispensing pursuant to pharmacist orders
- Operation of all automated dispensing and packaging devices both within and outside the pharmacy (patient care areas) for use in the delivery of patient medications
- Timely delivery of medications to patient care areas and returns to the pharmacy when the patient is discharged or the medication no longer needed
- Is a good steward of all hospital resources
- Works with the Pharmacy Purchasing Associate to maintain adequate inventory of pharmaceuticals and general supplies
- All other duties as assigned
- Demonstrates appearance and hygiene appropriate to the delivery of quality services.
- Actively participates in all efforts to maintain a safe, clean environment.
- Communicates effectively with patients, visitors and colleagues.
- Cooperates with other hospital departments.
- Work is accurate and thorough; attention to details is evident.
- Maintains current knowledge and skills necessary to perform competently.
- Ability to work a flexible work schedule based on the needs of the organization
- Complete annual health assessment form as required, maintains current inoculations.
- Adheres to organizational policies and procedures related to:
- Mandatory education
- Annual health assessment
- Licensure verification (if applicable)
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Should be able to push/pull, lift/move 15 lb., be able to perform moderately difficult manual manipulations such as using a keyboard, writing, and filing for extended periods of time, must be able to perform tasks which require hand-eye coordination such as data entry, typing and using photo copiers. Mobility requirements may include the ability to be stationary at a workstation for a prolonged period time in addition to being able to squat or be mobile for a reasonable length of time and distance. Communication requirements include the ability to comprehend the spoken English language in addition to being able to communicate and read the English language.

Salary Range: $18.33-26.58 /hour Pay is based on experience, skills, and education. Exempt positions under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) will be paid within the base salary equivalent of the stated hourly rates. The pay range may also vary within the stated range based on location.
