Phlebotomist - Center for Primary Care

Summary: This position is primarily responsible for performing phlebotomy and other specimen collection procedures on patients in an outpatient clinical setting.  Additional duties include assisting with specimen processing and testing, record keeping, and data entry.

Education/Certification: High school diploma or GED required. Graduation from an accredited medical vocational institution with phlebotomy course diploma. Certified Phlebotomist.                                    

Experience:    Minimum one year of phlebotomy experience or successful completion of phlebotomy clinical rotation. Medical practice experience helpful.

Other Requirements: 

• National certification in phlebotomy preferred.
• Must have current CPR certificate or able to obtain within 6 months of hire.

Essential Job Functions:

• Verifies patient and labels specimens according to established policies and procedures.
• Prepares appropriate equipment to collect blood products. 
• Performs venipuncture and capillary punctures on patients as directed by the provider.
• Follows medical practice protocols related to safety, infection control, and confidentiality.
• Performs specimen testing as needed. 
• Maintains accurate records of collections performed and enters data into computer.
• Assists and attends to patients before, during, and after blood collection.
• Instructs patient on proper urine collection procedures.
• Cleans/sterilizes equipment, instruments, and work area following safety, cleanliness, and infection control procedures.
• Inventories supplies and places orders to ensure adequate supplies for procedures.
• Performs various other duties as assigned by the office manager.

Knowledge:

• Knowledge of phlebotomy techniques and best practices.
• Knowledge of OSHA and HIPAA policies.
• Knowledge of medical terminology.

Skills:

• Skill in performing efficient and effective blood draws.
• Skill in conducting cooperative interactions with patients and staff.

Abilities:

• Ability to interpret and respond appropriately to instructions.
• Ability to coordinate eye–hand movements to ensure patient comfort during blood draws.
• Ability to competently use Electronic Medical Records and Laboratory Information System.

Equipment Operated:

• Blood draw equipment including syringes, tubes, and needles
• Centrifuges and autoclave
• Computers, printers, and fax machines

Work Environment: Position is primarily in a well-lit office environment.  Performs duties in medical exam/procedure rooms or phlebotomy area. Exposure to communicable diseases, sharp instruments, bodily fluids, cleaning chemicals.

Mental/Physical Requirements: Must be able to effectively deal with the stresses of managing priorities and of anxious patients. Must be able to stand six to eight hours per day, lift up to 30 lbs. of supplies or equipment, and help with patient transport and transfer.
