- JOB SUMMARY
- Draws blood from patients in hospital, or similar facility, for analysis or other medical purposes
- DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Overall performance rating of below indicated essential job duties:
- Assembles equipment, such as tourniquet, needles, disposable containers for needles, blood collection devices, gauze, cotton and alcohol, on work tray in accordance to requirements for specified tests of procedures
- Verifies or records identity of patient and converses with patient to allay fear of procedure
- Correctly labels blood collected from patient listing patients name, medical record number, physician, date and time collected, and initials
- Correctly verifies in the computer the blood was collected
- Deliver the specimen collected to the correct department in the laboratory
- Regularly checks the collected and uncollected lists
- Attends mandatory training programs
- EDUCATION/LICENSE/ CERTIFICATIONS/OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- Minimum requirement:
- High school diploma or Associate’s degree (A.A.) or equivalent from two year college or technical school; or completion of a certified phlebotomy course or one year related experience and/or training
- National Phlebotomist certification through accredited program

- This job operates in a professional medical laboratory environment
- Regularly works near moving mechanical parts
- Constantly exposed toblood and/or body fluids andinfection.
- Occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals
- Occasionally exposed to risk of radiation
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
- PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Occasionally required to maintain a stationary position (standing or sitting)
- Frequently required to walk and move about
- Frequently required to operate a computer and other equipment
- Frequently required to use fine motor skills to handle and operate instruments/devices
- Frequently required to position self in order to meet patient needs
- Regularly required to communicate with patients and other care team requiring talking and hearing
- Frequently required to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
- Occasionally required to life and/or move up to 50 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
