Polymer Synthesis and Compounding Engineer
SIGMADESIGN has collaborated with a consumer electronics company seeking an experienced Polymer Synthesis and Compounding Engineer to join their facility in Redmond, WA. This position is a contract with an expected duration of 12 months with the opportunity to be extended.

This role is full-time in-office.
Primary Function:
The Polymer Synthesis and Compounding Engineer will be involved in new polymer materials development for next-generation
human-computer interaction technologies. You will be expected to utilize your full range of polymer architecture design/synthesis and characterization skills. You will also understand the structure-property-process relationships for novel polymer
scale-up and manufacturing.
Essential Job Functions - Responsibilities:
- Designing and synthesizing new small molecules with efficient processes for future scale-up with an end objective of breaking engineering trade-offs (i.e. mechanical, conductivity) and enhanced device performance with molded and 2D/3D printed polymeric systems;
- Designing and synthesizing polymers(e.g. ionically conductive polymers) to break engineering trade-offs and enhance device performance;
- Scaling up novel polymers from laboratory scale to pilot scale;
- Collaborating with polymer researcher scientists and materials engineers on new formulation design to support new materials development for stretchable electronics projects and programs; Collaborating with process engineers and testing engineers to build up structure-process-properties relationship understanding for materials development
Education and Experience: (Knowledge, skills, & abilities)
- MS in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineers, or Equivalent Experience;
- Comfortable working in a chemical lab;
- 3 years experience with small molecule synthesis towards unique property applications, e.g. photopolymer resins, SLA resins, or siloxane chemistry
- 3 years experience in synthetic organic chemistry, reaction mechanisms, purification, scale-up routes and current advances within these fields
- 3 years of hands-on experience in polymer synthesis, including anionic polymerization, condensation polymerization, emulsion polymerization, living polymerization (ATRP, RAFT, NMP, ROMP), etc.
- Analytical skills including NMR, FT-IR, UV-Vis, Mass Spec, GC/HPLC, GPC, etc.;
- Understanding of polymer structure-process-property relationships;
- Experience collaborating and communicating effectively in team settings.
- Strong written and verbal English language communication skills.
- Excellent teamwork/interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively, both within and outside one's own work group.

Preferred Education and Experience: (Knowledge, skills, & abilities)
- PhD in Organic Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry, or Equivalent Experience;
- 3 years of hands-on experience in organic synthesis and purification;
- Experience with carbon-carbon bond coupling reaction (Stille coupling and Suzuki coupling, etc), C-H activation, protection/deprotection of functional groups, Diels-Alder reaction, etc;
- Experience with ionic polymer, conjugated polymer, fluoropolymer, dielectric polymer synthesis;
- Experience with polymer formulation, photopolymerization, photo-acid and base generators, additive manufacturing, or other advanced polymer manufacturing technologies;
- Experience of hands-on experience in polymer formulating, compounding, and molding;
- Demonstrated experience working effectively and efficiently with diverse teams, inclusive of internal partners
Work Environment
LAB: Standard lab/production environment. Appropriate safety garments (PPE) must be worn. Occasionally may be required to work in environmental conditions that emulate typical user environments in order to facilitate design testing and validation. Occasionally may be required to travel as required to other facilities, clients or suppliers. Must be able to stand and work as long as 12 hours in different positions. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds unassisted.
ENGINEERING: Standard office environment with normal amounts of office related conditions. Occasionally may be required to work in environmental conditions that emulate typical user environments in order to facilitate design testing and validation. Occasionally may be required to travel as required to other facilities, clients or suppliers.
