Postdoctoral Scholar - Oregon Health & Science University
Portland, OR
About the Job
The Oregon Institute of Occupational Health Sciences is an independent research institute within OHSU that is dedicated to health and safety in the workplace. We perform biomedical, clinical, and applied occupational research aimed at promoting health and reducing disease and disability among workers across the nation, particularly in Oregon. The Institute receives its base funding from the Oregon Workers' Compensation Fund and leverages this base funding to secure additional funding via federal government grants.
The Clinical Physiology and Chronobiology Program is located within the Institute and specializes in clinical research on the effects of physical activity, sleep, and circadian rhythms on physiology and pathophysiology in humans. The successful candidate will serve as a project leader on research projects funded by NIH R01 and R35 grants and will receive mentoring from Drs. Thosar and Shea (primary investigators) as part of the Clinical Physiology and Chronobiology Program.
The postdoctoral scholar will be involved in multiple research projects with human volunteers, including examining the biological basis of physiological and pathophysiological changes across the day and night. Such research includes blood-pressure control, and the mechanisms of increased risk for adverse cardiovascular events, such as myocardial infarction and stroke, in the morning. There will also be opportunity to pilot clinical trials in circadian medicine and interventions to protect vascular function under conditions of stress.
Primary duties will include making physiological measurements in research volunteers, managing data, developing scientific ideas, writing grant applications and manuscripts, and supervising research staff. The successful candidate will be proficient in project management, independent monitoring of study operations, and management of human-subjects IRB protocols and modifications. Shift work and weekend work (including night-time data collection) is expected. Additional duties may include overseeing and managing research equipment, materials, and logistics (with the assistance of research staff). Experience with making measurements in human physiology, data analysis, and overseeing research studies is required. Experience in integrative physiology, e.g., exercise, nutrition, circadian, or sleep studies; measurement of cardiovascular, pulmonary, and metabolic variables; accelerometry; and microneurography are desirable.
To apply, please upload a letter of introduction personalized to this position, résumé/CV, contact information for three academic/professional references, and a published paper.
