Title: Principal Design Engineer (Power Electronics)
Job Type: FTE, Direct Hire
Location: Pittsburgh, PA – onsite
Job Summary

The Principal Design Engineer will be responsible for creating and implementing designs for electronic components such as inductors and transformers. Designs will be used as enabling technology for the applications listed above. A specific near-term emphasis will be placed upon design of advanced inductor and transformer products using new soft magnetic alloy and manufacturing technologies based upon custom developed multi-objective optimization methods combined with finite element modeling. Integration of designed component specifications into commercially available circuit modeling software to investigate interactions and interfaces with various power electronics converter topologies will also be explored.

Qualifications

- Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in an engineering field is required; strong preference for Electrical Engineering
- M.S. or Ph.D. degree specializing in power magnetics and electromechanical design – strongly preferred
- Experience with design of passive magnetic components (Ideally 5+ years)
- Proficiency in using Ansys, COMSOL, and other finite element analytic methods as well as SolidWorks/ other CAD tools
- Experience with electrical circuit simulation tools such as PSPICE, PLECS, MATLAB-Simulink, etc.
- Familiarity with multi-objective optimization routines and methods
- Expertise in magnetics tied to power electronic systems with examples of successful designs used in application
- Experience with low voltage and medium voltage power electronics and passive components

Description
- Collaborate with customers and stakeholders throughout design, modeling, and component building processes to effectively meet needs of customer specified applications for inductors and transformers.
- Translate requirements from the customer into success criteria and specifications of components and materials used to meet those requirements.
- Develop and utilize advanced modeling and simulation techniques to design and optimize components.
- Work closely with internal engineers, suppliers, and all other stakeholders to effectively build components based upon optimized designs.
- Analyze results from models and prototypes to make recommendations for design modifications
- Perform product and material benchmarking to support customer discovery and marketing
- Continuously improve modeling and design tools used in component design
- Track and advise company leadership on external technology developments related to power electronic applications, design tools, and physical testing capabilities.
- Manage and execute tasks according to agreed upon deadlines while meeting expectations on quality of work.
- Complete technical reports of completed work for internal and external purposes, including white papers and funded work proposals.
- Work closely with Design Engineer(s) focused on electric machines to cross train and share best practices.
- Perform all other duties as required
