We are seeking a skilled Process Automation and Controls Engineer to join our team and help design, implement, and optimize control systems for various industrial processes.
Position Summary: The Process Automation and Controls Engineer will be responsible for designing, programming, testing, and commissioning control systems for process automation projects. This role involves working closely with clients to understand their process requirements and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to deliver solutions that improve operational efficiency, reduce downtime, and enhance safety. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in PLC programming, HMI design, process instrumentation, and control systems integration.
Responsibilities:
- Design and Development:
- Design and implement control systems for process automation, including PLCs, HMIs, SCADA, and distributed control systems (DCS).
- Develop detailed control strategies and system architectures to meet client specifications and process requirements.
- Create system documentation, create training manuals, and conduct training
- Programming and Integration:
- Program and configure PLCs, HMI's , SCADA and automation devices as required as part of the control process.
- Integrate process instrumentation and control devices, such as sensors, actuators, and variable frequency drives (VFDs) into the overall systems architecture
- Ensure seamless communication between control systems and process equipment utilizing network protocols such as Modbus, Ethernet/IP, and Profibus.
- Testing and Commissioning:
- Create and/or review FAT / SAT documentation
- Lead the testing, simulation, and validation of sequence of operation at customer sites.
- Oversee the installation, commissioning, and troubleshooting of automation systems to ensure they perform as intended.
- Collaborate with field teams and customers to ensure successful project handover and start-up.
- Continuous Improvement:
- Analyze system performance data to identify areas for improvement and optimization.
- Collaborate with stakeholders and implement changes and upgrades to improve process efficiency, reduce waste, and enhance safety.
- Stay current on industry trends and emerging technologies in process automation and control systems.
- Compliance and Safety:
- Ensure that all control systems meet industry standards and regulatory requirements, including UL, CE, OSHA, NFPA, and SIL.
- Maintain safety protocols and ensure all automation solutions are designed with safety at the forefront.
Qualifications:
- Preferred education is a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Automation, or a related field.
- 3+ years of experience in process automation, control system design, and programming.
- Proficiency in PLC programming (Rockwell's ControlLogix and GuardLogix, Siemens Simatic S7, and other PLC's), HMI/SCADA solutions (PanelView, Inductive Automation, SIMATIC) .
- Strong understanding of process instrumentation, PID loops for pressure, flow, level, and temperature sensors.
- Understanding and familiarity around Edge computing and cloud computing including ML and AI.
- Familiarity with industrial communication protocols (Modbus, Ethernet/IP, Profibus).
- Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, electrical schematics, and control diagrams and database reporting software
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Willingness to travel for on-site testing, commissioning, and support. (roughly 30%)
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand, walk, and move around industrial facilities for extended periods.
- Ability to lift and carry equipment weighing up to 25 pounds.
- Comfortable working in a range of environments, including noisy, dusty, or temperature-variant areas.
