Location: Waco, TX
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Performs moderate to complex patient service work. This includes routine and emergency care, treatment, and training for people with intellectual disabilities in a residential setting.
- Performs routine nursing work at the competent level
- Works under moderate supervision from Charge Nurses or Nurse Managers (Nurses II/III) with limited use of initiative and independent judgment.
- Conducts comprehensive assessments of patients' nursing care needs using specialized skills in (depending on the setting) psychiatric or medical-surgical nursing.
- Identifies nursing diagnoses or problem lists and formulates an initial plan of care based on assessment data. Serves as a team leader and provides clinical supervision to other nursing staff members including Licensed Vocational Nurses, and Mental Health Workers as necessary.
- Establishes unit routines and develops and maintains the therapeutic milieu.
- Makes observations of patient behavior and status and reports to the physician, other team members and supervisor as appropriate.
- Carries out nursing interventions as identified in the multidisciplinary treatment plan.
- Administers medications as ordered and maintains medication administration and controlled drug records according to facility policy.
- Serves as group leader for therapeutic patient groups or patient teaching activities as necessary or as requested.
- Trains other staff members as necessary or as requested.
- Must understand that duties, location of work, and shift/pattern are subject to change as determined by the administration to meet the needs of the hospital.
- Must understand that duties may include exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials
LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, OR REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:
- Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Texas (or a state that recognizes reciprocity through the Nurse Licensure Compact)
- Current CPR certification
- Valid Photo ID
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- Prefer 2 years as a direct care nurse
- Prior experience performing psychiatric nursing duties
- Must demonstrate considerable knowledge of nursing techniques and procedures; of health care laws and regulations; of medical diagnoses and procedures; of accepted medical treatment patterns; of community health and nursing care principles, practices, and procedures; of program regulations and procedures.
- Must be able to appropriately interact with individuals with developmental or psychiatric disabilities and staff members.
- Knowledge of nursing care standards, nursing procedures, techniques, and the principles and processes used in providing appropriate patient care.
- Knowledge of emergency procedures and emergency equipment, i.e., CPR, and ability to assess and care for residents and/or staff members in emergencies.
- Skills in using reasoning to identify problems and in considering an appropriate resolution of situations.
- Skill in the operation of computers and applicable computer software.
- Ability to prepare and maintain records and to use an electronic health record system once trained.
- Ability to communicate effectively and to instruct others.
- Must have strength and flexibility to safely perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
