Job Summary
The Public Safety Supervisor (Sergeant) serves as the shift supervisor and shall be responsible for all officers, dispatchers, administrative staff, and campus events during their respective shifts. The Public Safety Sergeant is responsible for maintaining the security and safety of persons and property on the university campus; identifying potential security and safety hazards; being observant and responding to major incidents or potential criminal activity on campus; maintaining good public relations by assisting others as a source of information and direction; overseeing the controlling and regulating of traffic and parking; investigating all security, safety, and traffic incidents. The Public Safety Sergeant shall direct the day-to-day shift work of the Office of Public Safety (OPS) in accordance with University Policy, State Statutes, OPS directives, and Special Orders prescribed by the University under the direction of the Director of Public Safety (Chief) or his designee.
Principle Duties/Responsibilities
- Ensure adequate allocation of personnel and resources during their shifts.
- Supervise the work of Public Safety Officers, Public Safety Corporals, support staff, and Communications personnel as required.
- Advises and assists public safety corporals and officers in non-routine incident/criminal or other investigations and personally participates in the more difficult problems encountered by subordinates.
- Be aware of and supervises enforcement of parking, traffic and safety regulations, special event management, and crime prevention and detection programs during their shift.
- Ensure that all calls for service from citizens are answered by assignment of personnel or referral.
- Review and approve reports, referrals, and other work product generated by Public Safety Officers and Public Safety Corporals.
- Will respond to any incidents of a serious nature occurring during their shift.
- May represent the Director of Public Safety and/or Harris-Stowe State University at University and community meetings to explain activities and functions of the Office of Public Safety and to establish public relations.
- Will carry a University issued cell phone and will respond to calls, emails, or text messages in accordance with departmental policy.
- Make recommendations for training of staff under their supervision.
- Complete ongoing evaluations of staff under their supervision and complete required evaluation forms as directed.
- Serve in occasional “On-Call” status during days off.
- The Sergeant shall carry an approved firearm at all times while on duty.
- The Sergeant shall the department issued Taser, baton, and pepper spray at all times while on duty.
Education and Experience Requirements
- A minimum of three years of progressively responsible experience in law enforcement or security management.
- A combination of education, law enforcement and private security experience may be considered.
- Previous supervisory experience is preferred.
- Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university in criminology, law enforcement, business administration, public administration, security management, or related field.
- Bachelor’s or other advanced degree preferred.
- A combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
- Certification in the State of Missouri as a police officer under POST standards preferred.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain an armed security officer license, through the St. Louis County Police Department/St. Louis Metropolitan
- Police Department Private Security Licensing Unit, within 30-days of employment.
- Must possess a valid driver license upon the effective start date.
Other Required Skills and Abilities
- At least 21 years of age
- U.S. citizen or legal resident alien No felony convictions.
- Free of any type of chemical dependency
- Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong organizational ability and the ability to meet deadlines.
- Ability to use a computer and type a minimum of 25 words per minute
- Must have the ability to respond effectively to the needs of a diverse and demanding student and parent population.
- Must be a self-starter who works well in a fast-paced, dynamic, team-oriented, and culturally diverse environment.
- Must be perceptive and patient, with strong people skills and a willingness to assist others.
- Ability to demonstrate ownership, accountability and teamwork.
- Ability to focus on results and to commit on excellence.
