About the Job
The City of Berkeley is seeking a Solid Waste Operations Manager (Classification: Public Works Operations Manager) to oversee solid waste and recycling programs, collection, and Transfer Station operations within the Zero Waste Division of Public Works. This leader will drive the continued success of Berkeley’s comprehensive Zero Waste Management programs, ensuring sustainable practices, operational efficiency, and exceptional customer service for residents and businesses. They will oversee three direct reports and 110 total staff, and will contribute to the management of the $50 million Division budget. The ideal candidate is a highly experienced leader in waste management, with a strong understanding of collection operations and workplace safety. They will also have experience motivating and leading teams, managing budgets, and navigating complex union environments. Their strategic oversight will directly impact the City’s environmental sustainability efforts, including compliance with regulations such as SB 1383, the rebuilding of the city’s Transfer Station, and the launch of Berkeley’s ambitious 10-year Zero Waste Management Plan.
