An allergy, asthma, and immunology nurse is a registered nurse who focuses on the care of patients with chronic allergic conditions. These conditions include but not limited to asthma, allergic rhinitis, urticaria, and atopic dermatitis.
Responsibilities:What You Will Do
The allergy nurse is responsible for rooming, taking histories and vitals for all patients. The nurse then carries out orders from the physician for specialized diagnostic procedures that include:
- skin testing and intradermal testing
- skin patch testing
- pulmonary function testing
- exercise treadmill testing
- administering food and drug challenges
- close monitoring of patients for risk associated with procedures
- management of systemic reactions in the office
In addition, the nurse is responsible for an immunotherapy shot and biologic clinic under the direct supervision of the physician.
The allergy nurse also has administrative duties such as but not limited to, answering patient phone calls and/or MyChart requests, reordering medications, and calling for preauthorization’s and setting up deliveries for biologic medications.
Qualifications:Education
- Graduated of an accredited School of Nursing; RN with ADN or BSN
- Preferred one year of nursing experience; inpatient or outpatient
- Unrestricted Licensed RN, in the state of Illinois
- BLS Certification required
- Certification in Asthma Education by the National Asthma Educator Certification Board, preferred
Experience
- Possess the cognitive skills required to perform skin testing and intradermal testing, skin patch testing, administering food and drugs for oral challenges, and performing pulmonary function testing
- Proficient in administering PO, IM, subcutaneous, and inhalant medications as well as intradermal and percutaneous testing
- Diagnosis and treatment of anaphylaxis in the outpatient setting; prompt assessment of vitals, administration of oral and IM medications and coordination of care with EMS
- Must be able to get along with others, to be a team player, to accept constructive criticism from your supervisor and be able to follow work rules.
- Basic computer skills: EMR required, Epic and Merge systems preferred.
- High level of organizational skills, ability to multi-task, to think critically with excellent communication with the medical team, and to analyze and interpret extensive data.
- Provide compassionate care to patients and family members dealing with serious/potentially life- threatening medical issues and sometimes traumatic emotional events.
