This position will report directly to the CNO. This person/position is responsible for planning, organizing and supervising the nursing care, ensuring that patient care needs are met during his/her shift, and providing physicians and patients with optimal service, in a cost effective manner. The House Supervisor is expected to contribute to an environment supportive of personal and professional growth of self and others. They should exhibit dependability and coordinate individual professional practice with a focus on hospital mission, values and vision. The House Supervisor should participate as a member of the hospital management team. And must oversee the coordination of patient placement, serve as a resource to the clinical staff, and provide assistance with conflict resolution. During their assigned shift effectively coordinates the overall activity of the hospital in conjunction with the Directors of each department according to the hospital policies; procedures and protocols. They serve as a representative of Administration, and should seek assistance as necessary or indicated.

Hours of Position:
PRN, nights (7p-7a); minimum PRN commitment is 4 shifts in a 6 week schedule including 1 major and 1 minor holiday per year.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Effective communication and ability to define issues and problems while bridging the gap for the staff and end user

• Knowledge of biophysical and spiritual aspects of patient population served and of human behavior ranging from infancy to geriatrics
• Ability to demonstrate effective communication skills, empathy, and unconditional positive regard toward all patients; families and co-workers
• Compliance with organizational requirements, including policies, procedures, protocols and regulations
• Knowledge and implementation of standardized PPE regarding the prevention and transmission of infectious disease and isolation process
• Attends 85% of all department meetings and required to review and initial all department minutes
• Consistently provides accurate and complete handoff communication to any healthcare provider according to policy
• Maintain current licensure and required certification and annual education requirements
• Flexibility in schedule in order to meet the needs of the patients, community and staff
• Active participation in performance improvement to improve patient quality outcomes
• Rounding on all areas throughout shift and clinical areas every two (2) hours (Crisis intervention may alter timeliness and is a consideration, but not a pattern)
• Assess overall unit staffing needs of each patient care unit and places personnel accordingly. Takes appropriate steps to replace unanticipated vacancies and adjusts as indicated based upon patient needs
• Utilizes sound judgement in decision making to provide quality care while maintaining guidelines established by VBCH policies, procedures and protocols
• Provides input to appropriate department managers for evaluation purposes
• Makes Patient Care Services Unit Directors aware of situations occurring in their areas of responsibility to allow proper intervention when indicated
• Monitors Patient Care Services activities to identify and address resolution of patient care problems
• Performs duties of other departments after operating hours, as assigned
• Acts as a liaison between patient care services personnel and other hospital personnel or department heads
• Responds and attempts to resolve patient complaints and alerts Administrator On-Call of potential problems
• Acts as a resource person and is an effective, efficient, inter/intradepartmental communicator who assumes administrative duties during emergencies or disasters until relieved by the administrator/Chief Nursing Officer, or his/her designee
• Acts as a professional role model: adheres to the Standards of Performance, maintains a positive attitude, being visible and available, and listening effectively
• Addresses behaviors in real time and acts in accordance with policy. Counsels personnel when necessary and consults with the proper Unit Director for input as indicated
• Provides support to staff, families and significant others during code and other patient care crisis situations with the ability to maintain composure under pressure
• Procures supplies, after regular operating hours, from central sterile and material management as required and in accordance with rules
• Assists Managers, Supervisors and Directors by continuously surveying and addressing and identifying needs, problems and issues and relating to appropriate resource(s)
• Familiar with organizational functions of all units and ensures compliance with policies, regulations, JCAHO Standards, HIPAA and procedures of the hospital
• Assist clinically in all patient care areas (i.e. blood administration; stress tests; EKG’s; Admissions; Discharges; patient transport observation; medication delivery; IV skills; education)
• Promotes Teamwork among staff
• Demonstrates professional behavior with a positive outlook during peak periods of activity and other stressful situations

• By Wednesday every week, address weekend coverage
• Complete staffing sheets
• Never call anyone off without notification – all area checked and confirmed for coverage
• Review competency book before assigning or moving personnel. Deliver competency paperwork to preceptor when allowing any and all training to occur
• Familiar with all codes and indicators – know your role and each team members role and expectations. Direct staff; paperwork and notifications as indicated. Remain calm and direct staff and patient care when appropriate.
• Know the rules for fire – Safety Watch - Where; Log; Frequency and reporting structure
• Know when to notify AOC; O/C lists and process; surgical team
• Call in process – must be person to person voice call (No text; No Message; No Voicemail) Must be timely. Fill out log with time and date; notify their department Director and/or Charge Nurse or O/C team member. Follow the pathway or plan to attempt to obtain coverage. Communication is 2-Way – Set expectations and direct who is calling who for coverage – maintain and direct List; Mode of Contact and Response
