About the Job
Supervises and manages the radiation therapist and the administration of the radiation therapy section.
Responsibilities:- Interviews, selects, hires, and retains employees
- Ensures orientation and training for employees
- Manages performance
- Executes progressive discipline up to and including termination
- Performs compliance requirements as outlined in the Employee Handbook
- Manages front line operations of area of accountability related to meeting/exceeding departmental goals, 5 keys of excellence, DCH Mission and Vision.
- Plans, directs, and supervises patient treatments by the radiation therapist.
- Coordinates the use of radiation oncology equipment and schedules work assignments.
- Evaluates patient census/acuity to determine staffing plans on a daily, weekly, and annual basis to meet patient care needs; communicates needs to the director.
- Collaborates the planning, annual revision, and implementation of unit/departmental policies, procedures, and objectives.
- Maintains employee contact by meeting with staff members on a regular basis. Communicates necessary information to staff ongoing and provides feedback from staff to physicians and CTC Director.
- Regularly attends hospital and medical staff assigned committees.
- Establishes and revises unit/department specific standards of practice/care; ensures uniform patient care processes.
- Ensures continuity of patient care, patient teaching, discharge planning, and staff competency specific to the needs and age of the patient population served.
- Trains staff in the use of and maintain awareness of new equipment, procedures, devices, and techniques.
- Performs all administrative functions of the radiation therapy department for both patients and employees.
- Plans, recommends, implements, and evaluates the annual operational and capital budget in a timely manner.
- Analyzes monthly financial statements and completes variance reports in a timely manner. Assures financial accountability for the unit/department to include staffing, supply cost and overtime.
- Monitors utilizations of overtime.
- Conducts timely and objective performance appraisal of employees.
- Performs improvement coordination, implementation and reporting.
- Continually evaluates the attitudes, morale and interpersonal relationships of staff members; promotes methods to improve in these areas; consistently motivates staff in a positive manner.
- Maintains clinical proficiency, required certifications, possesses strong clinical judgment.
- Attends educational offering related to Performance Improvement, Management and other related topics as needed.
- Evaluates performance of staff and completes evaluations in a timely manner.
- Provides for a safe environment for staff members, patients, and visitors.
- Reacts and responds to crisis/problem situations in an appropriate manner.

Certified RT(R)(T) with at least two years experience as a radiation therapist and familiarity with the dosimetry process. Must be computer literate and be skilled in the use of linear accelerators, simulators, block cutters, and other equipment located in radiation therapy. Must demonstrate positive leadership skills and provide effective direction for therapist. Must be able to read, write legibly, speak and comprehend English.

WORK CONTEXT
Must be able to work with others in a team setting. 100% of time in contact with others. Occasionally must deal with difficult people and explain various issues involved in radiation therapy. 100% of time responsibility of safety and health of others in your care. Occasionally public speaking will be needed for tours. Electronic mail will be used for informational use.
PHYSICAL FACTORS
Physical presence onsite is essential. Hearing and vision must be normal or corrected to within normal range. Able to perform the duties with or without reasonable accommodation. Ability to tolerate prolonged periods of standing and walking. Must be able to lift a maximum of 100 lbs. at least 5% of an 8-hour day. Must be able to exert 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Must be able to stand, walk, kneel, crouch, stoop, reach, push, pull, and carry certain objects with good coordination over the course of a day’s activities. Is able to push stretcher / wheelchair with average adult patient. Ability to reach reasonable distances in any direction. Must be able to run in emergency situations. Must be able to move fingers in a coordinated manner. 100% of time working indoors in an environmental controlled conditions. Includes working with others in a close proximity 100% of the time. Occasionally requires climbing a ladder. Includes exposure to human body fluids, disease, infection and/or cleaning solutions. Requires wearing common protective or safety equipment.
STRUCTURAL FACTORS
Due to the complexity of radiation therapy being exact, accuracy is expected in performing this job. Work schedules are adjusted as needed due to patient volumes.
OTHER JOB FACTORS
- Enter information into the ARIA system.
- Set up and perform monthly chart rounds with physicians, physics staff and radiation therapists
- Check charges daily and performs chart audits at end of patients’ treatment
- Order supplies.
- Perform machine warm-up and treat & simulate whenever needed.
- Gather department film badges and send them to the company every month.
- Conduct tours in the department.
- Coordinate with inpatient floors to transport cancer center patients.
- Teach and mentor students.
- Cut blocks, construct treatment devices
- Must adhere to AIDET principles.
- Supports and enforces infection control practices.
- Scope of Service: Adult and Geriatric.
- Schedule monthly preventative maintenance routines for treatment machines and CT simulator.
- Enter payroll information into computer including any days off, changes, sick days, vacation days, and call time.
- Monitors department readiness for JCAHO.
- Gathers data for department quality and monthly metrics.
- Participate in Quarterly Cancer Committee.
