Title:Registered NurseLocation:3851 North River RoadWest Lafayette, IN 47906Interview:WebcamPurpose of Position/Summary: Incumbent works as a Registered Nurse (RN) in theNursing Department of the Indiana Veterans' Home. Performs all aspects ofnursing care, within the scope of the Indiana Nurse Practice Act, utilizingspecialized knowledge, judgement and skill. The RN4 works with minimalsupervision, and has some management responsibilities and accountability to onenursing unit, or area of nursing (i.e. Education, Care Planning). Reports toNurse Supervisor 6.Essential Duties/Responsibilities: Administers medications and treatments asordered by a physician; Assesses residents based on principles of biological,physical and behavioral sciences; Documents results and reports results to thephysician; Communicates changes of conditions to families; Takes vital signs;Transcribes physician orders; Answers call lights and responds to any residentrequest for assistance; Follows recommended safety and infection controlstandards; Adheres to resident's rights at all times; Maintains correctcontrolled substance counts during shift; Completes required documentation ofnursing notes, transfer forms and other records; Assists with orientation of newemployees; Participates in resident care planning, MDS's and documentation;Assist with monthly change over of all necessary forms; Completes anddistributes nurse aide assignments; Gives a thorough report to on-coming shift.Responds to codes;Job Requirements: Must be licensed as and maintain license as a Registered Nursein Indiana; Ability to understand and communicate with residents, other staffand families; ability to complete required paperwork correctly and legibly;ability to provide safe, efficient nursing care, following all applicable stateand Veterans' Administration rules, IVH policies and procedure and all HIPAArules; ability to use medical equipment within the scope of licensure; abilityto prioritize workload; ability to be flexible; ability to assess resident's andreport to the physician; ability to administer medications and treatments in asafe, efficient manner, recognizing medication side effects; ability to knowapproved abbreviations and appropriate terminology; ability to write care plans,based on individual needs; ability to operate AV equipment; ability to respondappropriately to medical emergencies and make appropriate decisions; must attendrequired inservices.Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports: May assign and review work ofNursing Attendants in assigned area; reports to Nurse Supervisor 6Difficulty of Work: Work involves complex judgement decisions, based onscientific and biological principles. Must demonstrate sound nursing judgementin assessment of residents.Responsibility: RN is legally responsible for own nursing actions, with minimalsupervision, requiring judgement for use of specialized knowledge. Failure toutilize good judgement may be deterimental to resident care and to facilityreputation.Personal Work Relationships: Works with residents, professional andnon-professional staff, residents' families, visitors, volunteers and staff fromother facilities.Physical Effort: Must be able to walk and stand for long periods of time; mustbe able to bend, stoop, twist, reach above shoulders, push/pull, must be able toassist with lifting and transferring residents, from 100 to 500+ pounds, using agait belt or other accepted practices, or with a mechanical device.Working Conditions: Work is generally on a nursing care unit, office orclassroom, in a controlled environment; may be exposed to body fluids andcleaning chemicals; may be exposed to violent residents.
