JOB DESCRIPTION: The nursing student is responsible for providing nursing assistance and performing basic nursing procedures to groups of patient with assigned nursing department, under the supervision, guidance and direction a registered nurse. In addition, the nursing assistant can gain additional clinical practice to enhance their preparation as future licensed nurse responsibilities, under the continuous direct on-sire supervision of a register nurse( for nursing care beyond that performed by nursing assistants once deemed competent for nursing assistant related tasks); interprets plan of medical care and provides input on the nursing care plan and assist in the following provided they have been deemed clinical competent by nursing instructor. Provides personal care including baths, shampoo, shave, back rub, position changes, makes beds, prepares patients for meals, feeds patients, and passes ice water. Answers call lights and bells promptly to meet patient needs. Collects specimens, stool, urine, sputum, etc. Collects inputs and output and records appropriately. Greets visitors, answers telephone, screen calls, and takes appropriate information and messages and distributes to appropriate employee to meet the caller's needs. Collects and records temperature and vital signs on patient. Obtain and records pertinent information per hospital policy. Assess presence and extent of pain of patient and family information with RN and understand what steps to alleviate. Assist and/or feeds patients, provides between meal nourishments, provides fresh drinking water and encourages fluids when indicated. Assist in progressive ambulation of patients by gate belt, wheelchair, stretcher and bed. Administers enemas and douches as indicated and documents appropriately. Operates converter chair, lifts, scales, beds, stretchers, and wheelchairs. Applies ace bandages, ted hose and elastic stockings, and sequential compression devices. Assist with oxygen support and incentive spirometer. Discontinues Foley catheters. Assist RN with restraint devices and side rails to ensure safety of patient. Observes isolation techniques and provide direct care to patients in isolation. May serve as a patient sitter. Assist in ostomy care and education. Set up orthopedic appliances. Performs nursing functions requiring skills and judgement (supervised by RN). Maintains and records and reports necessary information in regard to patient care. Confers periodically, with RN on activities of the nursing staff and matters that relate to patient care. Assist in patient and family education by the RN. Serves as a liaison between the patient and other members of the health care team. Prepares patient for surgery and other therapeutic and diagnostic procedures. Maintains a safe environment for patient care. Observes IV site and appearance, may remove peripheral IVs, performs peripheral IV line dressing changes and simple wound care. Attends bedside report, daily huddle, and inter-disciplinary rounds. Maintains clerical and related unit supplies, places orders and replenish stock. Locate unit and system policies and procedure's repository (Policy Manager) MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: One year of experience which includes direct patient care, OR the successful completion of a nursing assistant training course, or currently enrolled in an accredited BSN RN or Associate RN program and completion of 2 clinical rotation. Clerical experience and experience with various computer applications Preferred. BLS certification required. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: (Medium-Heavy) 36-75 lbs, 0-33% of the work day (occasionally); 20-35 lbs, 34-66% of the workday; (frequently); 10-20 lbs, 67-100% of the workday (constantly); Lifting 75 lbs max; Carrying of objects up to 35 lbs; Occasional to frequent standing & walking; Occasional sitting; Close eye work (computers, typing, reading, writing); Physical demands may vary depending on assigned work area and work tasks. ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS: Factors affecting environment conditions may vary depending on the assigned work area and tasks. Environmental exposures include, but are not limited to: Blood-borne pathogen exposure; Bio-hazardous waste Chemicals/gases/fumes/vapors; Communicable diseases; Electrical shock; Floor Surfaces; Hot/Cold Temperatures; Indoor/Outdoor conditions; Latex; Lighting; Patient care/handling injuries; Radiation; Shift work; Travel may be required; Use of personal protective equipment, including respirators; environmental conditions may vary depending on assigned work area and work tasks.
