Summary
The Rehabilitation Technician is responsible for providing general support for the efficient function of the Rehabilitation Services Department through the transportation and preparation of patients to include a variety of equipment and multiple therapists. The Technician must demonstrate competency in handling pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients, and is responsible for assisting in the scheduling of patients, receiving referrals from Doctor’s offices, entering charges for patient care, and ensuring adherence to Chesapeake Regional Medical Center’s regulations, policies, and procedures.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
These duties and responsibilities described below represent the general tasks performed on a daily basis; other tasks may be assigned.
- Maintain the cleanliness of treatment areas for incoming patients by folding, storing, and distributing linen multiple times daily
- The frequent cleaning and making of treatment beds and the retrieval of specified supplies and equipment for proper provision of patient treatment is required
- Perform computer functions required for patient charges, including: credits, order entry, equipment repair, patient location, patient scheduling, and monitoring the surgery schedule
- Enter charges for inpatient and outpatient services in a timely and effective manner to enhance reimbursement of services
- Assist the office coordinators on a daily basis to include answering phones, setting up initial and follow-up appointments, pulling and filing patient reports and charts, and faxing reports to physicians and other health care professionals
- Collect, record, and deposit co-pays for outpatients
- Make telephone calls to a multitude of insurance companies to verify patients’ health insurance benefits and to receive authorization/clearance for patient evaluation and subsequent treatments by the Rehabilitation Services Department
- Call physician offices to verify requests for treatment and to receive faxed referrals authorizing treatment
- Take vital signs and monitor several patients at a time while patients perform therapeutic exercises
- Communicate in an expeditious manner when there is a change in the patient's condition or performance
- Perform a multitude of therapeutic exercises with the patients, under the direction of the therapists, per specific protocols
- Provide frequent reassurance and direction to the patients and their families through a basic understanding of treatment procedures and the ability to answer questions regarding procedures
- Assist patients requiring special needs to assure their safety and comfort, as needed
- Transport patients to and from the nursing units using a variety of equipment
- Required to operate a wheelchair, stretcher, geriatric chair, hospital beds, and Hoyer lift
- Must be able to properly assess portable equipment such as oxygen cylinders, iMeds, PCA pumps, feeding pumps, Flowtron Pumps, Wound Vacs, Cryo Cuffs, and various drains, wires, and tubes
- Perform stand-pivot, two, three, and four person transfers in a manner which will not exceed established precautions by the physicians
- Maintain the safety of patients, self, co-workers and family members at all times
- Place appropriate orders for any depleted stock or missing equipment which are necessary for the proper operation of the Rehab Services Department
- Clean and return all used equipment to its proper location, and notify the Bio-Medical Department of any past due inspections or equipment malfunctions
- Ensure all durable medical equipment and continuous passive motion machines are returned to the department, disinfected, working properly, tagged, and ready for use by the therapists or nursing staff
- Provide frequent support for gait training of unstable or very large patients through both verbal and physical commands, and by changing weights or other resistive devices required to develop muscle strength
- Act as a liaison between unit secretaries, nurses, CNAs, and therapists
- Relay pertinent information regarding treatments and patient activity, such as return to bed, pain level/need for medication, cognition, etc.
- Attend required hospital-wide orientations, meetings, and in-services
- Demonstrate a commitment to flexible work scheduling when necessary to ensure patient care

Education and Experience
Minimum Required Education: High school diploma or equivalent
Preferred Education: Courses in Biological Sciences
Experience: Previous experience as a Rehabilitation Technician, or as a CNA, is preferred
