About the Job
A research assistant is available in the addiction lab, Department of Pathology and Anatomy. The Research Assistant will perform both lab managerial tasks as well as basic scientific research in the field of neuroscience. Research will focus on the mechanisms responsible microglial activation induced by abused drug and HIV proteins using in vitro assays and mouse models. Studies may involve mouse brain surgery.
Responsibilities:- Assists in lab experiments under direct supervision.
- Works with mice, set up crosses and performs genotyping
- Perform cell culture, laboratory bench work, molecular biology and biochemical experiments.
- Prepares chemical solutions according to standard formulas.
- Maintains inventory of lab supplies and orders supplies as needed for experiments
- Perform routine maintenance and troubleshooting on laboratory equipment.
- Keep detailed laboratory records and research data in an organized manner.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s degree in a Biological Science or related field (biochemistry, neuroscience) from a four-year college or university.  Master degree is preferred.
Experience preferred in working with mice and performing basic molecular biology techniques such as nucleic acid isolation, PCR, western blotting, cell culture. Some proficiency with computers is desired. Ability to work well in a team, keep detailed record keeping and solve basic mathematical equations is required.
