About the Job
The Research Assistant I position for management of mouse colony is available in the Flanigan Lab in the Center for Gene Therapy, Nationwide Children’s Hospital. The role supports the overall project goal of high-throughput evaluation of mouse models of human diseases. The Research Assistant will provide skilled care and husbandry of laboratory animals and perform various experimental mouse procedures and complete data entry into a research database. All staff members also have regular interactions with Flanigan Lab staff as needed in matters of animal colony maintenance, welfare, and research procedures.

Responsibilities:
Job Duties
- Performs animal husbandry assignments that include mating, weaning, and colony maintenance
- Enters colony and genotyping data in Microsoft Excel and mouse colony management software
- Assists with the organization of animal housing and research areas
- Recognizes and addresses animal health and welfare concerns
- Records data and compiles summary reports
- Interacts regularly with the laboratory team and reports to others within this larger group
- Leads weekly meetings with other team members regarding changes, updates, and needs of the mouse colony
- Plans, organizes, and reserves animals for studies
- Creates and maintains forms and other documentation tools for animal studies
- Involvement and assistance with animal procedures such as: o Genotyping animals o Weighing animals o Injections o Necropsies o Blood and tissue collection
- Diligent and timely transport of study animals between vivarium and lab
- Utilizes a set of “best practices” for documentation of IND-enabling studies
- Assistance with other daily functions of the laboratory as necessary
Minimum Qualifications
- Associate degree in a basic science or related field.
- One year of relevant experience.
- Experience in mouse handling.
- Experience with computer data.
- Proficient in Microsoft applications (i.e., Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.)
- Effective written and oral communication skills.
Able to demonstrate a history of excellent workplace attendance and meticulous work, highly motivated and detail oriented. Preferred Qualifications - Ability to create and design innovative and strategic solutions for the management of the colony.
- Certification by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) at the ALAT level
- Familiar with SoftMouse application
- Knowledge of GLP and FDA regulations.
