Research Associate, Geoeconomics - Council on Foreign Relations

Overview:

CFR’s David Rockefeller Studies Program is one of the country’s largest foreign policy think tanks with a widely respected and influential research staff. The Studies Program aims to advance the discussion of American foreign policy and international affairs through its writing, publications, public outreach, and discussions.

 

Within the Studies Program, the Maurice R. Greenberg Center for Geoeconomic Studies works to promote a better understanding among policymakers, academic specialists, and the interested public of how economic and political forces interact to influence world affairs. In April 2024, the Greenberg Center launched RealEcon: Reimagining American Economic Leadership, an initiative to assess the U.S. role in the international economy, analyze what is at stake for the American people in whether and how the United States exercises leadership, and identify the trade-offs among different approaches to international economic engagement.

 

The research associate will contribute to these efforts and related research under the direction of the senior fellow for geoeconomics. This position will be based in CFR’s Washington office on a hybrid basis. CFR currently defines hybrid status as working at least three days a week onsite, with Tuesdays and Thursdays considered institutional anchor days where all staff are required to be onsite.

The major responsibilities of this position will include (but are not limited to)::

• Researching economic security, investment, trade, and other issues important to U.S. foreign policy as requested by the senior fellow
• Drafting, editing, and proofreading articles, reports, social media, and other content
• Coordinating events, including preparing invitations, travel arrangements, corresponding with speakers and presiders, helping to prepare background papers and materials for distribution, and providing other logistical support
• Providing administrative support to the fellow, including managing travel, coordinating with external organizations, handling correspondence, and responding to requests for information
• Assisting with managing budgets, including preparing budgets, tracking monthly statements, and preparing vouchers for reimbursement
• Assisting the fellow with social media outreach, including publishing a blog, website, video, and/or using social media applications such as X, as needed
• Providing support across departmental lines and for other fellows, upon request

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in international relations, economics, political science, or related field with strong academic credentials, including both quantitative and qualitative research skills
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including drafting, proofreading, and editing a range of formats (social media, op-eds, policy memos, reports, etc.).
• Strong organizational and multitasking skills
• Experience using Excel for data analysis

Pay Range

$55,000 to $58,000 per year

Pay commensurate with experience and education
