The Resident Director plays a crucial role in fostering a positive living and learning environment within our student housing apartment community. They are responsible for overseeing all aspects of the residential experience, ensuring the well-being and academic success of the residents. The Resident Director serves as a leader, mentor, and resource for Community Assistants and residents while promoting a safe and inclusive community conducive to personal growth and development.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Community Management: Develop and maintain a welcoming and inclusive community atmosphere that encourages resident engagement, personal responsibility, and respect for diversity. Foster positive relationships among residents through community-building initiatives, social events, and educational programming.
- Resident Support: Provide guidance and support to residents, addressing their concerns, needs, and conflicts. Serve as a resource for academic, personal, and social matters, referring residents to appropriate campus resources when necessary. Conduct regular check-ins and maintain open lines of communication with residents.
- Crisis Management: Respond promptly and effectively to emergencies, conflicts, and critical incidents within the community. Implement and enforce policies and procedures to ensure the safety and security of residents. Collaborate with campus security and emergency response teams as needed.
- Staff Supervision: Supervise and mentor a team of Community Assistants (CAs), providing guidance and support in their roles. Coordinate and facilitate regular staff meetings, training sessions, and ongoing professional development opportunities for CAs. Provide feedback to enhance the team's effectiveness.
- Administration: Assist with day-to-day operations of the residential community, including occupancy management, room assignments, maintenance requests, and key distribution. Maintain accurate resident records and reports, ensuring compliance with relevant policies and regulations.
- Collaborative Partnerships: Collaborate with campus departments and resources, including student affairs, counseling services, academic support, and campus life, to enhance the overall student experience. Participate in committees, meetings, and campus-wide initiatives that promote student well-being and success.
- Participating in the “turn” process.
- Additional responsibilities and requirements may be assigned based on the specific needs of the housing community and institution.
ESSENTIAL SKILLS and QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree preferred or currently enrolled in a degree program.
- Previous experience working in student housing or residential life is strongly preferred.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work effectively with a diverse student population.
- Strong leadership and supervisory skills.
- Understanding of crisis management and conflict resolution strategies.
- Flexibility to work evenings, and weekends, and respond to emergencies as needed.
- At least two years of experience in residential life or a related field.
