DUTIES
JOB KNOWLEDGE AND ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES:
General Description
The Respiratory Therapist provides comprehensive evaluation and treatment of residents
with respiratory illnesses and diseases.
Essential Duties
1. Plans, implements and evaluates diagnostic and therapeutic respiratory services to
assist in the management of residents with cardiopulmonary and related disorders.
2. Operates, maintains and manages mechanical ventilators and equipment. Provides
technical support for equipment related to the practice of Respiratory Therapy.
3. Maintains compliance with federal and state regulations. Is knowledgeable of the
Medicare and Medicaid regulations and coverage decisions provided by CMS.
4. Provides Respiratory Therapy Services including but not limited to, application
and monitoring of:
a. Arterial blood gases
b. mechanical ventilator support
c. artificial airway care
d. bronchial hygiene
e. aerosol therapy
f. humidification therapy
g. suction therapy
h. tracheostomy care
i. tracheostomy tube changes
j. pharmacological agents related to respiratory care procedures
k. cardiopulmonary rehabilitation
l. emergent airway care, cardiopulmonary resuscitation
5. Provides Respiratory Therapy diagnostic activities including but not limited to:
a. Obtaining and analyzing physiological specimens
b. Interpreting physiological data
c. Performing tests and studies of the cardiopulmonary system
6. Provides resident and family education activities focused on the promotion of
cardiopulmonary wellness.
7. Provides/coordinates clinical respiratory services under the physician orders.
8. Performs respiratory/clinical assessments.
9. Checks ventilators every four hours and as needed. Assesses/evaluates toleration
of attempts to wean.

10. Verifies continuous positive airway pressure therapy, non invasive ventilation.
11. Verifies positive pressure ventilation for oxygenation.
12. Documents resident procedures, organizes and analyzes data, maintains accurate
records.
13. Conducts resident assessment, makes treatment recommendations, and makes
decision based upon protocol.
14. Interacts positively with staff, physicians, residents and family members.
15. Screens, evaluates, and treats residents as per Plan of Care. Verifies that residents
who are admitted for treatment receive the required services and that the service
delivery is documented appropriately.
16. Develops and maintains an administrative recordkeeping system that provides an
accurate record of the number of treatments given and charges incurred.

c. Quality Assurance requirements and compliance with regulatory
requirements.
d. Compliance with current law and policy to provide a work environment
free from sexual harassment and illegal and discriminatory behavior.
e. Code of Conduct and Compliance Programs when performing job
functions
5. Supports and participates in common teamwork:
a. Cooperates and works together with all co-workers; plans and completes
job duties with minimal supervisory direction, including appropriate
judgment.
b. Uses tactful, appropriate communications in sensitive and emotional
situations.
c. Follows up as appropriate with supervisor, co-workers or residents
regarding reported complaints, problems and concerns.
d. Promotes positive public relations with residents, family members and
guests.

e. Completes requirements for in-service training, acceptable attendance,
uniform and dress codes including personal hygiene, and other work
duties as assigned.
f. Participates as assigned in the orientation of new staff and demonstrates a
positive, helpful, and enthusiastic attitude.
6. Immediately reports incidents of alleged resident abuse or neglect or alleged
violations of residents' rights to Director of Nursing or Executive Director.
7. Knowledgeable of age specific developmental factors specific to adult and
geriatric residents (i.e. physical, cognitive and socialization factors) in planning
delivery of care.
8. Maintains current practice standards or changes by participating in educational
opportunities provided by the Facility and outside resources.
Other Duties
Perform tasks which are supportive in nature to the essential functions of the job, but
which may be altered or redesigned depending upon individual circumstances. Performs
other work duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
SUMMARY OF QUALIFICATIONS:
Qualifications
Education/Training: Graduate from an accredited school of Respiratory Therapy. Must
possess a current license in the state of current practice. Must have current CPR
certification.
A.D.A ((Americans with Disabilities Act) (as amended)) REQUIREMENTS: Must be
able to bend, stoop, push, pull, and walk and stand for most of the working day. Requires
manual dexterity sufficient to provide hands-on care to residents as well as to operate
standard office machines such as fax, telephone, etc. Requires normal range of hearing
and vision. Must be free from communicable diseases that pose a "direct threat" to the
health or safety of others and which cannot be eliminated by a reasonable
accommodation. Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds, and transfer and transport
residents. Must be able to carry and transport supplies. Must be able to pass a post-offer,
pre-employment physical health examination as a condition of employment. Must be
capable of performing the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable
accommodation(s).
Skill(s): Proficient reading, writing, grammar, and mathematics skills; proficient
interpersonal relations and communicative skills; knowledge of drug interactions, side
effects, and incompatibilities; decision-making skill; proficient assessment skills; safety
techniques; basic computer skills; able to operate various medical and office equipment,
auditory and visual skills. Must be able to communicate in English, both verbally and in
writing, and possess sufficient communication skills to perform the tasks required.

Experience: Must possess strong knowledge regarding state, federal and local
regulations as they pertain to long-term care.
