WORK OBJECTIVE
Regulates, directs, and controls pedestrians at a designated school crossing while children are going to and from school. Works with considerable independence under the general supervision of a Police Sergeant.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Remains standing at the school crossing in full view of passing traffic for a specified period of time.
- Guides and directs pedestrians and school children through busy intersections utilizing issued safety gear and hand motions to ensure pedestrian safety.
- Remains alert for possible safety concerns at school crossing.
- Reports emergencies, equipment defects, and traffic dangers.
- Records and reports license number of potentially dangerous vehicles.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Be at least 18 years of age.
- Must not have been convicted of a felony. Must not have been convicted of a misdemeanor involving moral character, false statements, perjury or domestic violence.
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Must successfully pass a medical assessment exam and complete the required training for a School Crossing Guard before starting the position. Must obtain the Florida School Crossing Guard Certification.
- Must pass a Police Department background screening.
Exceptions to the minimum qualifications must be reviewed by the Human Resources Director and approved by the City Manager prior to job offer.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Completes forms and writes reports when necessary.
- Ability to comprehend and communicate fluently in verbal and written English.
- Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos.
- Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations.
- Must be able to handle the stress of working in a high traffic environment.
- Must be able to work with school age children.
- Skilled in the operation of listed tools and equipment.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands and fingers or handle; reach and motion with hands and arms; step up and down curbs; blow a whistle; and talk or hear and visually observe vehicle and pedestrian traffic activity. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.
EQUIPMENT USED:
Gloves, safety vest, whistle, crossing guard signs, and all other related equipment.
