About the Job
The Security Access and Surveillance Manager is part of the Vanderbilt University Public Safety Department and is responsible for ensuring the safety and security of personnel, property, and information within the designated premises. This position is much more than just a CCTV monitor and card reader. This role will assist with the implementation and management of the security access & surveillance program and associated databases, manage the access control systems, monitor and maintain surveillance equipment, and respond to security incidents promptly and effectively.
This role requires strong attention to detail, excellent communication skills, and the ability to make quick decisions under pressure. Reporting directly to the Chief Security Officer – Police Inspector, the Security Access and Surveillance Manager will work with various departments and stakeholders across the university and the community. The position will be located on campus and a remote work option is un-available.
Vanderbilt University Public Safety comes under the charge of the Office of the Senior Associate Vice Chancellor/Chief of Police for the Division of Administration. The Public Safety Department includes a staff of over 300 people. The department is organized into four Divisions: Administration, Operations, General Services, and Emergency Management. The Department employs commissioned officers, non-academy-trained officers for security-related functions, and administrative personnel.
Duties and Responsibilities
Access Control Management:
+ Maintain and manage access control systems, including key card readers, door contacts, mobile credentials, biometric scanners, and electronic locks.
+ Grant or deny access permissions based on established protocols and authorization levels.
+ Conduct regular audits of access control logs and databases to ensure accuracy and compliance.
Surveillance Monitoring:
+ Monitor surveillance cameras and other security systems to detect and prevent unauthorized activities.
+ Identify and investigate unusual or suspicious behavior or security breaches.
+ Maintain awareness of potential security threats and vulnerabilities.
Incident Response:
+ Respond promptly to security incidents, alarms, and emergencies.
+ Take appropriate action to mitigate risks and minimize potential harm or loss.
+ Collaborate with law enforcement agencies or other authorities as needed.
Security Policies and Procedures:
+ Identify and create efficient processes to enhance the safety and security around door access and video systems.
+ Ensure compliance is maintained through policies and procedures.
+ Provide guidance and training to staff on security& surveillance best practices.
+ Continuously assess and improve security measures based on emerging threats and industry standards.
Documentation and Reporting:
+ Document security incidents, investigations, and actions taken following established procedures.
+ Generate reports on security activities, trends, and findings for management review.
+ Maintain confidentiality and integrity of sensitive information.
Collaboration and Coordination:
+ Function as the primary contact between Public Safety, Card Services, Housing (VORAD), and building managers ensuring collaboration and coordinated efforts across departments.
Qualifications
+ Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Technician, or a related field or experience in lieu of is required.
+ Certifications such as:
+ Certified Security Project Manager (CSPM) or Certified Access Control Professional (CACP) are preferred.
+ System Security Certified Practitioner (SSCP) is preferred.
+ Certified Surveillance Professional is preferred.
+ Must have and maintain a valid driver's license and a satisfactory driving record.
+ Vanderbilt University engages a third party to provide continuous up-to-date notifications regarding negative changes to motor vehicle records.
+ Three (3) years of experience in security operations, access control, or surveillance monitoring is preferred.
+ Proficiency in working with access control software platforms and surveillance camera systems is required.
+ Strong troubleshooting skills and the ability to resolve technical and security issues promptly is required.
+ Utilize analytical abilities to identify patterns or anomalies in system data and develop solutions is required.
+ Knowledge of security best practices and regulations related to access control and surveillance is necessary.
+ Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for collaborating with internal stakeholders and external vendors are required.
+ Ability to remain calm and composed under pressure, particularly in emergencies requiring immediate response and resolution is required.
+ Familiarity with database management systems and reporting tools to effectively manage system data and generate actionable insights is required.
+ Ability to utilize report tools to create detailed reports on system performance, security incidents, and compliance metrics is required.
+ Experience with access control systems, and video recording systems is preferred.
Physical Requirements
+ Stand, climb, and walk for extended periods.
+ Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
+ Ability to pass a thorough background investigation
+ Ability to meet department appearance and grooming standards.
Working Environment
+ Must be available to respond to emergencies outside of standard business hours, weekends, and holidays.
+ Environment is stressful requiring the ability to multi-task while being isolated from fellow workers.
