The Senior Substation Design Engineer is a senior-level technical expert specializing in the physical design, layout, and construction of electrical substations. This role involves leading and managing the design process, from conceptualization to detailed engineering, perform ensuring compliance with industry standards, safety regulations, and project requirements.

Position Responsibilities and Duties:
- Lead and oversee the physical design and layout of electrical substations, including equipment arrangement, bus configuration, bus calculations, and review of the site selection, grading, and fencing.
- Ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards, and regulations governing substation design and construction, such as IEEE, NEC, NESC, and local building codes.
- Develop conceptual and detailed substation layout drawings, equipment plans, section views, and elevation drawings using CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD).
- Collaborate with civil and structural engineers and review structural calculations to ensure proper foundation design, structural support, and seismic considerations for substation equipment and structures.
- Coordinate with protection engineers to integrate substation equipment, such as transformers, circuit breakers, switchgear, and control buildings, into the overall layout.
- Perform technical reviews and provide guidance on equipment specifications, vendor selections, and procurement activities related to substation infrastructure.
- Manage interdisciplinary coordination and communication with internal teams, external consultants, contractors, and utility stakeholders throughout the design process.
- Develop detailed bill of materials including specifications of critical components.
- Support project managers in project planning, scheduling, budgeting, and reporting activities, ensuring timely and cost-effective delivery of substation design projects.
- Provide QA/QC Review of project drawings and documentation.
- Assist with Vendor selection at Procurement (Verifying Specs are met and make recommendations)
- Maintain accurate as-built drawings, diagrams, and documentation for physical design of the substations.
- Provide engineering support during construction.
- Participate in team meetings/calls regularly
- Demonstrate and maintain a safe work environment and direct safe work practices in energized substations.
- Complete other responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Skills or Experience Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Civil or Electrical Engineering; Master's degree preferred.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or equivalent certification preferred.
- 5+ years in substation engineering, with a focus on physical design and layout.
- Proficiency in CAD software for developing substation layout drawings and construction documents.
- Strong understanding of civil engineering principles, including structural components, and foundation design.
- Knowledge of structural engineering principles and standards related to substation equipment support structures and foundations.
- Familiarity with electrical substations, including equipment types, ratings, clearances, and special requirements.
- Excellent understanding of applicable codes, industry standards, and regulations governing substation design and construction.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills, with a keen attention to detail.
- Effective communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and stakeholders.
- Commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement in protection and control engineering practices.
- Ability to adapt to changing priorities, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and deliver results under tight deadlines.
