A day in the life:
- Mechanics will layout, fabricate, assemble, and install sheet metal products and other related equipment associated with commercial HVAC equipment and related mechanical systems (ductwork, plenums, fire dampers, and diffusers, air handling units, VAV boxes, fan power boxes) on large commercial and industrial construction projects
- Typical construction projects include hospitals, data centers, high-rises, universities, secondary schools, and government facilities
- Select gauge and type of sheet metal according to SMACNA
- Locate and mark dimensions per plans, specifications and shop drawings
- Fabricate duct onsite to include miter and alterations to shop fabricated duct
- Use hand tools and portable power tools in the installation of joints of duct such as slide and drive, TDF, snap lock, and other assemblies as required
- Lay out openings and coordinates with other trades
- Erect and install equipment such as air handling units, VAV boxes, fan power boxes, and others as required
You should have:
- Work experience as a Sheet Metal Mechanic for commercial construction projects. (Journeyman level experience is preferred, license not required)
- Experience with layouts and ability to read and work from drawings
- Ability to direct the work of a helper or apprentice
- Safety-minded and knowledge of OSHA safety regulations
- Initiative; self-motivated (driven), self-starter
- Knowledge of basic construction/shop math
- Knowledge of International Mechanical Code (IMC) and Sheet Metal and Air Contractors National Association (SMACNA) standards
- A reliable source of transportation to and from work
